The Warriors defeated Southern Guilford 9-4 thanks to a strong start, scoring on a groundout by Bryce Lowe in the first inning and a double by Gabe Hernandez in the second inning.
Warriors tallied three runs in the sixth inning. The rally was led by a single by Camdon Wishon, a groundout by Matt Owens, and a fielder's choice by Dawson Payne.
Nick Halo took the win for Warriors. He surrendered four runs on four hits over six and two-thirds innings, striking out eight. Hernandez threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Kendal Clark took the loss for Southern Guilford. He allowed six hits and five runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two.
Warriors totaled eight hits in the game. Wishon and Connor Cox all managed multiple hits for Warriors.

February 26, 2018 – With the high school basketball season over for Randolph County teams, it's only two days until the start of spring sports.
Wednesday, February 28 is the first day that official contests (other than scrimmages) are allowed by the NCHSAA. State Christian School Association contests begin in early March.
All ten schools in Randolph County participate in baseball, softball and women's soccer. Most of the eight public schools participate in track and field along with men's tennis and golf while the Christian School Association offers both men's and women's golf in the spring.
Asheboro High School also fields a men's lacrosse team.

Faith Christian School (21-4) vs Alamance Christian School (24-3)
Faith Christian School will attempt a 'Three-peat' Saturday afternoon as the Eagles play for their third consecutive championship in women's basketball.
For the second straight year it's Faith versus Alamance. In 2017, Faith won the title by a 37-32 score. This season each team has won on their home court, FCS defeated Alamance 41-37 in Ramseur while Alamance won 51-33 in Graham.
The 2018 State Championship will be played on a neutral court, at Gospel Light Christian School in Walkertown.

February 23, 2018 – Wheatmore senior Hailey Mince signed with Emory & Henry College in January.
In her first three seasons with Warriors softball, nearly half of her hits have been for extra bases including nine home runs. Mince was an All-State selection following her sophomore year and All-District as a junior.
Emory & Henry is located in Emory, Virginia where the Wasps are a part of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
February 23, 2018 – The basketball season ended for the Wheatmore men's team and the rest of the PAC 7 last night in the second round of the state playoffs.
Wheatmore was defeated at top seed Mountain Heritage by the score of 56-54.
Also last night, the Andrews men lost at #7 West Stokes 64-45 and the Andrews women's team, a #7 seed, became the second upset victim of #23 Currituck County losing 51-50 in overtime.
In the 3A playoffs, both teams from Eastern Guilford advanced while the Williams men and Southeast Guilford women were eliminated.
In the North Carolina Christian School Association, Faith Christian School defeated Faith Christian Academy of Goldsboro in the State Quarterfinals 46-27. That puts the Faith women's team (20-4) in the second semi-final game Friday afternoon at 5:00 against Union Grove Christian School (20-8).
The winner will play the winner of Friday's other semi-final game between Alamance Christian (23-3) and Wilson Christian (17-12) for the 2018 State Championship at 2:00 pm Saturday.
The NCCSA Championships are being played at Gospel Light Christian School in Walkertown.

February 21, 2018 – Wheatmore was the only Randolph County basketball team to advance past Tuesday's first round. The Warriors defeated Thomasville 56-52 in the men's tournament and will play at top seeded Mountain Heritage High School in round two on Thursday.
Also moving on was TW Andrews which defeated Hibreten 49-44 while Randleman lost at Elizabeth City Northeastern High School 57-42 and Providence Grove fell at Northern Vance 79-59.
In 2A women's action North Wilkes defeated Trinity 72-43, Washington eliminated Jordan-Matthews 50-48 and PAC 7 champion TW Andrews advanced past North Lenoir 69-35.
Eight teams from the Mid-Piedmont Conference qualified for the High School basketball playoffs but only four of those advanced to the second round.
In women's action Tuesday night Asheboro fell to Tuscola 42-34 and Southern Alamance lost at East Wake 59-49. Conference champion Eastern Guilford defeated West Johnston 64-21 and the second seed from the MPC, Southeast Guilford, defeated Central Cabarrus 82-76.
The top seed from the conference advanced in men's basketball as Eastern Guilford defeated Wilson Fike 82-45. Williams, which tied for second place but entered the state playoffs as the number three team from the MPC defeated Durham Hillside 92-76. In the west regional Southern Guilford lost at Gastonia Huss 58-52 and Asheboro fell at top seeded Cox Mill 67-24.

February 19, 2018 – Anna Thomas, a senior at Providence Grove, has committed to Emory & Henry College for softball. The All-State performer hit .527 as a junior and has a career batting average of .436 through three varsity seasons. Thomas also has 38 wins as a pitcher for the Patriots.
Emory & Henry is located in Emory, Virginia where the Wasps are a part of the ODAC.
February 19, 2018 – More Randolph County student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers.
Olivia Henderson, a three year varsity performer in volleyball at Randleman has signed with Salem College of the USA South Conference. Henderson committed to the Spirits on February 15.
Brandon Carter of Providence Grove has signed with Guilford College. Carter will continue his basketball career as a Quaker in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

The final brackets have been released for the men's basketball playoffs by the NCHSAA.
From the Mid-Piedmont Conference Asheboro (10-14) is seeded 32nd in the west bracket and will open the tournament at top seeded Cox Mill High School (23-3). Southern Guilford (17-9) qualified as the #20 seed and travels to #13 Huss High School (17-8).
In the east bracket, MPC champion Eastern Guilford (23-2) is seeded third and will host #30 Fike (11-13). Williams (21-4) is the 11th seed and hosts Hillside (14-10) in the opening round.
In the 2A playoffs, four teams from the PAC 7 are in with Wheatmore and TW Andrews in the west bracket; Providence Grove and Randleman in the east. The Warriors (22-5) are the 17th seed and travel to #16 Thomasville (19-6) on Tuesday while the Raiders (9-13) earned a 10th seed and will host #23 Hibriten (17-7). Providence Grove (15-8) is seeded 25th and plays at #8 Northern Vance (19-7) in the first round while 28th seeded Randleman (13-9) will play at #5 Northeastern (20-4).

February 17, 2018 – State Wrestling Championships
With only the championship matches remaining, eight Randolph County wrestlers made it to the penultimate round in this year's state tournament.
Four Uwharrie Charter wrestlers, senior Bailey Parks and juniors Caleb Bryant, Nick Menjivar and Isaiah Martin finished in third place in their weight divisions.
UCA senior Dylan Jones placed fourth, as did Wheatmore senior Chase McKinney and sophomore Devin Daugherty.
Wheatmore's Hayden Caldwell finished in sixth place.
This afternoon's Championship Round will feature five more local wrestlers - Hayden Waddell and Josh Poteat from Uwharrie Charter; Ethan Oakley and Jared Niemitalo from Wheatmore and Michael Smith from Asheboro High School. The championships are scheduled to begin at 4:30 pm.

February 15, 2018 - The PAC 7 Conference will need a tie-breaker game between Trinity and Eastern Randolph to determine the number three seed for the upcoming girls state tournament.
The Bulldogs, Wildcats and Wheatmore Warriors finished in a three way tie for third place during the regular season. Wheatmore was eliminated in the first round of the Conference Tournament while Trinity and Eastern were eliminated in the semi-finals.
The tie-breaker game will be Friday at 6:00 pm at Trinity High School.

Kalynn McNair competed in the NCHSAA Indoor Track and Field championships in Winston-Salem this past weekend. The Asheboro senior finished second in the state in the triple jump despite jumping with a sore knee that had prevented her from practicing.
McNair's distance in the finals was 38-01.25. She has already committed to UNC-Charlotte for Track & Field.

The 2018 State Wrestling Championships will take place this week in the Greensboro Coliseum rather than the Coliseum Complex Field House.
2A, 3A and 4A preliminary matches begin Thursday, February 15th and 1A matches start on Friday the 16th. The tournaments continue through Saturday.
Twenty-eight Randolph County wrestlers qualified for the title matches including two defending State Champions. Hayden Waddell is among the 10 wrestlers from Uwharrie Charter Academy who will be competing. Waddell won last years title in the 106 pound weight class. Among the eight qualifiers from Wheatmore is last year's winner at 120 pounds, Ethan Oakley - who was attending Providence Grove at the time. Four wrestlers from Trinity will be competing for a title along with two from Asheboro, two from Eastern Randolph and one each from Randleman and Southwestern Randolph.

February 10, 2018 – Regional playoff competition has wrapped up for high school wrestling with seven local athletes earning Regional Championships.
Michael Smith of Asheboro, Hayden Caldwell, Ethan Oakley, Jared Niemitalo and Pierre Hakizimana from Wheatmore and Hayden Waddell and Jerry Jiminez of Uwharrie Charter all placed first in their weight classifications.
More than 80 athletes from the eight wrestling programs in Randolph County participated with a number of others placing in the top three of their class. Local results can be found on the SportsTone Wrestling page.

February 10, 2018 – Randleman senior Tanner McGee has signed with the University of South Alabama Jaguars to continue his football career after high school.
McGee played three seasons on varsity for the Tigers at the quarterback position with more than 4300 receiving yards with 45 touchdowns against 19 interceptions. He was named Offensive Player of the Year following the 2017 season in the Piedmont Athletic Conference after helping his team to an 11-2 record (6-0 in the conference) and the third round of the 2A playoffs.
USA is a member of the Sun Belt Conference located in Mobile, Alabama.

Congratulations to Wheatmore's Katie Fritz who finished 3rd in the state in the 50 yard freestyle race. Fritz was third following the morning preliminary heat with a time of 25.05 seconds and then swam the distance in 25.19 seconds during the afternoon championship race.
A total of fve swimmers from Randolph County competed in the 2018 High School Swimming Championships today in Cary. The women's relay team from Wheatmore High School, consisting of Emma Godwin (Jr), Kyndall Fritz (So), Erin Lambeth (So) and Katie Fritz (Fr) finished 12th in the 200 yard Freestyle Relay and 13th in the 200 yard Medley Relay. Godwin also placed 14th in the 100 yard freestyle event.
Bradley Cox of Eastern Randolph High School advanced to the State Swim Meet after a strong showing in last week's regionals. Cox placed 16th in the 100 yard backstroke event.

February 8, 2018 - Trinity High School senior Brian Crooks has signed with Wingate University to play football following his high school graduation. Crooks was a starter for the Bulldogs on the offensive and defensive lines.
Prior to his family moving to Randolph County, Crooks was a starter at Mesa Ridge High School in Colorado. In three high school varsity seasons he totaled 179 tackles, four sacks and a touchdown.

A multi-sport standout, Avelino has been honored as an All-State performer multiple times in soccer and has also been recognized for her skills in basketball, volleyball and cross country.

The 2018 North Carolina High School Swimming Championships will begin Thursday at the Triangle Aquatics Center in Cary with championships for the combined 1A-2A classification taking place on Friday.
The 3A champions will be determined on Thursday and the 4A championships on Saturday.
Swimmers from the Piedmont Athletic Conference who qualified for the state meet include the women's relay team from Wheatmore High School which consists of Emma Godwin (Jr), Kyndall Fritz (So), Erin Lambeth (So) and Katie Fritz (Fr). They will compete in the 200 yard Freestyle Relay and the 200 yard Medley Relay.
Godwin also qualified for the 100 yard freestyle individual race as well as the 100 yard breaststroke event. Kyndall Fritz will be swimming in the 200 yard individual medley race and Katie Fritz qualified for the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle races.
Bradley Cox, a senior swimmer from Eastern Randolph High School, qualified for the State Meet in the 100 yard backstroke event.
Jennah Fadely, a freshman at Jordan-Matthews High School qualified in the 100 yard breaststroke and 200 yard individual medley races.
Preliminary races will begin at 9:00 Thursday morning with the State Finals scheduled to begin at 4:45 PM.

More than 20 Randolph County swimmers participated in the Regional Meets on Saturday. Top finishers included Wheatmore Freshman Katie Fritz who finished 1st in 50 yard freestyle. Fritz also finished 6th in 100 yard freestyle.
Other top finishers were Emma Godwin (Jr-WHS), 4th in 100 yard freestyle and 7th in 100 yard breast stroke. Bradley Cox (Sr-ER) finished 9th in men's 100 yard backstroke and Kyndall Fritz (So-WHS) was 10th in the women's 200 yard individual medley event.

February 2, 2018 – The Wheatmore Warriors and the Uwharrie Charter Eagles wrestling teams both reached the regional finals (state semi-finals) before being eliminated from the 2018 Dual Team Playoffs.
Wheatmore defeated Ledford 40-25 in the regional semi-finals Thursday with wins by Conner Nelson, Jared Niemitalo, Chase McKinney, Pierre Hakizimana, Joey Ferguson, Devin Daugherty, Mikel Long and Ethan Oakley who recorded his 100th high school win to help the Warriors advance.
Croatan High School then eliminated Wheatmore in the 2A East Finals by a 36-28 score. Wheatmore had wins by Oakley, Niemitalo, McKinney, Hakizimana, Daugherty, Caldwell and Nelson.
The Warriors finished the season with a team record of 25-5.
In the 1A East Regional, Uwharrie Charter defeated conference opponent South Stanly in the semi-finals before falling to Rosewood High School in the Regional Championship match 39-36.
Winning for Uwharrie Charter in the regionals finals were Bailey Parks, Isaiah Martin, Jamie Bernal, Hayden Waddell, Caleb Bryant, Jerry Jimenez and Branson Lambert.
The Eagles ended the year with a record of 27-2).
