Dawson Edwards of Randleman High School has committed to Barton College (Wilson, NC) for football. The Bulldogs will compete against South Atlantic Conference teams in football beginning this fall.
Trinity High School held a signing day Tuesday for Dakota Grimsley. An offensive lineman, Dakota has committed to Brevard College for football. The Tornados are a Division III member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

Easton Jones (ERHS '16) was named Player of the Week by the Big South Conference for his efforts on the baseball diamond last week for the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs. The junior infielder had ten hits in four games from the number five spot in the lineup.

February 23, 2020 – WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Heaven Fitch (Uwharrie Charter Academy) was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in this years 1A tournament following her State Championship win Saturday night at the Greensboro Coliseum. Also, according to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association:
Heaven Fitch became the first female to win an NCHSAA Wrestling Individual State Championship. Last year, she finished fourth to become the first female to place at the State Individual Tournament.
She was one of thirty Randolph County wrestlers who qualified for this years state tournament. Thirteen of those made it through to the final rounds with six making it to the championship round. Four local athletes, including Fitch, achieved that goal.
In 2A wrestling, Ethan Oakley (Sr, Wheatmore, 132 pound division) won his third championship in four appearances in the state tournament. Oakley has titles from 2017, 2019 and 2020, with a second place finish in 2018.
Winning championships in 1A wrestling were Heaven Fitch (Jr, Uwharrie Charter, 106 pound division), Gage Beal (Sr, Uwharrie Charter, 113 pound division) and Jerry Jiminez (Sr, Uwharrie Charter, 152 pound division).
Finishing second in the state were Devin Daugherty (Sr, Wheatmore, 285 pound division, 2A) and Sergio Saldana (Sr, Uwharrie Charter, 220 pound division, 1A).

The championship games of the Piedmont Athletic 2A Conference basketball tournament have been postponed until Saturday afternoon (2/22) because of school closings on Friday.
The girls tournament championship between Randleman and TW Andrews will tip off at 1:00 Saturday afternoon followed by TW Andrews and Jordan-Matthews in the boys finals around 2:30 pm.
Both games will be played at Randleman High School.

Two Wheatmore High School seniors have committed to different schools for college athletics.
Austin Biggs signed with Catawba College for football. The three-time All-Conference player will join the Indians in the South Atlantic Conference.
Neva Hippert, an All-Conference selection in both Track and Field and Cross Country, has committed to the University of Mt Olive for Track & Field. The Trojans compete in the Conference Carolinas.

FROM THE NCHSAA:
*CHAPEL HILL – Due to the wintry weather forecast to affect the state over the next several days, the NCHSAA has postponed the seeding date for the 2020 Men's and Women's Basketball Playoffs to Sunday, February 23, 2020. This decision was made in an effort to allow systems and conferences that become impacted by the weather to complete tie-breaker or conference tournament games as necessary and able.
Seeding will not begin prior to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and finalized brackets can be expected sometime Sunday evening on the NCHSAA Website and through a press release to the NCHSAA Media Email List.
*CHAPEL HILL – Due to the wintry weather forecast to affect the state over the next 24 hours, the NCHSAA has postponed the first day of the 2020 Individual Wrestling State Tournament to Friday at midday.
The NCHSAA Staff is working on a schedule that will still allow the tournament to be completed on Saturday night. More details and an updated schedule will be released tomorrow through the NCHSAA Website and other communication avenues.

Due to the forecast for winter weather, the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference has changed the schedule for the men's and women's basketball tournament semifinals. All four semifinal games will now be played on Wednesday at Walter M Williams High School in Burlington.
Women's semifinals are scheduled for 4:00 and 7:00 with men's games at 5:30 and 8:30. The schedule update is reflected on the SportsTone BASKETBALL SCHEDULE page.
A decision on moving the tournament championship games forward to Thursday night will be made by the end of the day Wednesday.

Lincoln Memorial University announced this week that Ty-Kella Goins (ER '16) has been named one of 50 Division II softball players on the National Player of the Year watch list. The senior infielder is hitting in the lead-off spot for the Railsplitters (currently 7-1) who are coming off of a 38-win season in 2019.

Trinity's Faith Bogue has signed to play soccer and continue her education at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, NC. Faith is the Captain of the Varsity Cheerleading Squad and has been a vital part of the girls varsity soccer team for four years.
Randleman senior Chloe Hicks has signed with Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virginia, to continue her education and softball career.
Both the St. Andrews University Knights and the Bluefield College Rams compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.

In North Carolina's second post-season women's wrestling tournament, Lindy Otero of Asheboro High School finished as Champion in the 138 weight division. Otero won her first three matches by pins in the day-long event before winning the title by points to finish the year with a 10-7 record.
The AHS senior finished third in the inaugural NCHS Women's Invitational Tournament following the 2018-19 season.

Katie Fritz and Spencer Hall from Wheatmore swam in the State Championship Meet today in Cary.
Fritz, a junior, garnered a 4th place finish in the 50 yard freestyle and she finished 5th in the 100 yard freestyle event.
A sophomore, Hall finished in 12th place in the men's 50 yard freestyle race.
Also from the PAC 7, Jenna Fadely from Jordan-Matthews medaled in the 100 yard breaststroke with a second place finish. The junior swimmer also finished 4th in the 200 yard individual medley.

February 5, 2020 – WRESTLING TEAM REGIONALS
The NCHSAA has announced the locations for Thursday's Regional Semifinal and Championship matches in the Dual Team Playoffs. Trinity and Uwharrie Charter will host regional matches scheduled for Thursday with the winner from both locations advancing to the State Championship matches in Greensboro Saturday.
After long road trips Tuesday, both Trinity and Wheatmore will wrestle at Trinity High School on Thursday. Trinity will face Croatan High School and Wheatmore will take on Washington High School in the Eastern Regional Semifinals at 6:00. The winners will then wrestle for the regional title at approximately 7:30.
In the 1A East Regional, defending champion Uwharrie Charter will host Thursday's semifinals and championship matches. The Eagles will face conference opponent South Stanly at 6:00 in one semifinal as Rosewood High School takes on Granville Central in the other. The winners will then wrestle for the regional title at about 7:30.

Dual Team Wrestling playoffs begin Tuesday for the Trinity Bulldogs, champions of the Piedmont Athletic Conference. The Bulldog grapplers are also the subject of this week's SPECIAL FEATURE from SportsTone.
February 3, 2020 – DUAL TEAM WRESTLING (ROUNDS 1 & 2)
Conference Champions Asheboro, Trinity and Uwharrie Charter, along with PAC 7 #2 seed Wheatmore have qualified for the Dual Team Wrestling post-season. The first two rounds will be held Tuesday night in sectionals or 'pods' of four teams at various locations.
In the 1A bracket of 24 teams, Uwharrie Charter has a first round Bye and will host a match between Albemarle and Neuse Charter. The winner of that first round match will then take on UCA in round two.
Asheboro will travel to Central Cabarrus and face Enka in the first round with the winner then wrestling the winner of the match between Central Cabarrus and Stuart Cramer High School.
Trinity, Reidsville and Morehead are in a sectional hosted by Dixon High School with the matches held at Dixon Middle School.
The Wheatmore matches with North Pitt, West Craven and Northeastern will be hosted by North Pitt at Wellcome Middle School near Greenville.
The recommended start time by the NCHSAA is 6:00pm for Round One and 7:30pm for Round Two. Winners from each of those sectionals will advance to Thursday for rounds 3 and 4. The Dual Team State Championship matches are this Saturday in Greensboro.

Congratulations to area Cheerleading Squads who competed in the NC Cheerleading Coaches Association State Championships at Friendship High School in Apex Saturday.
Trinity's Jessica McNeill will be among the competitors in the 2020 Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon, February 15th at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. Jessica qualified in the 55 meter dash, 300 meter dash and the 500 meter run.
Dual Team Wrestling Championships will be decided this week with first and second rounds held Tuesday, third and fourth (regional) rounds on Thursday and State Championships determined this Saturday, February 8th at the Greensboro Coliseum Fieldhouse. Brackets and locations will be announced Monday by the NCHSAA.
North Carolina will hold the second annual women's wrestling tournament on February 8th at Carolina Courts in Concord.
The individual wrestling post-season will begin with regional tournaments on Friday & Saturday, February 14 & 15. Wheatmore High School will host the 2A Mid-East Regional and Uwharrie Charter Academy will host the 1A East Regional.
