November 10, 2020 – SPORTSTONE ADDING VOLLEYBALL WEBCASTS

SportsTone will soon be adding another sport to the list of live events covered since the website began in 2017. High school volleyball has continued to grow in popularity around Randolph County since it became a state-sanctioned sport in 1976 and SportsTone is looking forward to providing coverage during the 2020 season.

Since 2013, at least six teams from Randolph County's public high schools have qualified for the post-season every year with all eight programs qualifying for the state tournament in 2015. After the 2019 season seven teams qualified for the NCHSAA playoffs with five advancing to the second round. Three local teams made it to the third round and Wheatmore High School made it as far as the East Region finals (round five) before the Warriors' season ended.

SportsTone volleyball coverage is scheduled to begin Tuesday, November 17 with a PAC 7 match featuring Randleman at Wheatmore.

November 3, 2020 – NCHSAA GUIDELINE UPDATES

According to published reports, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association has updated the guidelines for member schools regarding 'in-season' sports.

As cross country and volleyball teams begin try-outs and practice Wednesday, the indoor limit of 25 people will no longer be in effect. However, no one other than players, coaches and support staff will be permitted to attend. The NCHSAA still recommends working in smaller groups, maintaining social distancing and face coverings when possible but removing the limitations on participants should allow all teams to practice together.

For outdoor sports, skill development session limits of 50 participants (players, coaches and staff) are being increased to 100 participants. No spectators are permitted at development sessions. When try-outs and in-season practices begin for outdoor sports, spectators will still not be allowed but the limit on players, coaches and support staff will be removed.

Game day changes have also been announced. They include an allowance for teams waiting to compete in a second game – e.g. varsity volleyball teams scheduled to play after a junior varsity contest – to be in the facility but are required to follow the public mask/distancing guidelines until their game begins.

Transportation guidelines indicate that only one person may be seated on each bench seat in an activity bus except for people who live in the same household. Other vehicles are limited to two students except for people who live in the same household.

For spectators, the limits remain at 25 people for indoor competitions (except 50 percent capacity for swimming venues) and the lesser of 100 people or 30 percent capacity at outdoor competitions. Spectators must remain seated. A clarification of those numbers is that players, coaches, support staff, workers and entertainers do not count against the capacity limit.

Cross country and volleyball seasons begin Monday, November 16. Swimming competitions begin on Monday, December 7.
