November 28, 2018 – SWRHS RE-ALIGNMENT DENIED
On Tuesday, representatives from Southwestern Randolph High School and Randolph County Schools asked the North Carolina High School Athletic Association to re-assign the school to the 2A Classification beginning with the 2019-20 school year. Individual schools can ask to be re-classified at the mid-way point of each state-wide re-alignment period.
The state association reached a decision quickly and has denied the request. Parties were notified via email which read in part:
.
On Tuesday afternoon, November 27, 2018, the Board of Directors met in a
special session of the winter meeting at the NCHSAA offices. Unfortunately,
your request for Southwestern Randolph High School to be reclassified as a
2A school was denied. The board members felt the hardship was not
adequately satisfied using the specified criteria.
The current alignment went into affect in the fall of 2017 using the Average Daily Membership (ADM) numbers from the 2015-16 school year. At that time, 114 schools were classified as 3A ranging in size from 1031 to 1643 students. SWRHS was the 11th smallest school in that group with 1061 students.
Current members of the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference in order by ADM:
