Grimsley 47, Asheboro 12

Sam Gandy returned a Grimsley kickoff 95 yards for Asheboro's first score late in the first quarter. The Blue Comets scored again late in the second quarter when Gandy hauled in a 23 yard pass from Khyland Hadley-Lindsay to cap off an eleven play drive and cut Grimsley's lead to 20-12 at halftime.

The second half was all Whirlies, however, as Grimsley improve to 2-0 on the season.

Randleman scored on their first five possessions on their way to a 2-0 start to the season.

Coby Price passed for 201 yards with 2 touchdowns. Harrison Moffitt added a touchdown pass and rushed for a score.

Dominick Poole and Kevin Cruz caught scoring passes and Naheim Lilly had three touchdowns on 138 yards rushing

Elijah Reza threw 27 yard touchdown passes to Braxton Davis and Mark Flores. Davis also scored on a 50 yard run.

Khyland Hadley-Lindsay threw four touchdown passes for Asheboro but the Blue Comets came up short in the season opener at Randleman. Hadley-Lindsay connected with Isaiah Jackson, Logan Richardson, Jai Mason and Sam Gandy for scores. Miles McSwain returned an interception 50 yards for a score.

Naheim Lilly rushed for four touchdowns to lead the Tiger scoring. Harrison Moffitt had a rushing TD and Randleman got two scoring passes from Coby Price, one each to Dominick Poole and Dawson Edwards.

Wheatmore 36, West Davidson 27

Nick Halo threw for 240 yards and five touchdowns - two to Gabe Hernandez and three to Zach Berrier - in the Warrior's season opener.

Austin Biggs led the Wheatmore defense with 15 total tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Cam Wishon blocked a PAT and recovered two fumbles. Gabe Hernandez (INT) and Zach Berrier (INT, fum rec) also got involved in the take-a-ways.

Trevor Marsh, a three year player for Randolph County Post 45, has been named the National Player of the Year in American Legion Baseball. Marsh received the 2019 George W. Rulon Player of the Year award Tuesday at the American Legion World Series in Shelby, NC.

Marsh is a graduate of Asheboro High School and currently a student-athlete at UNC-Wilmington. He was also named the Most Valuable Player in this years Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament.

August 17, 2019 – AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

Randolph County got six hit from six different players but were only able to score one run and dropped a 4-1 decision to Fargo, ND Saturday afternoon in the American Legion World Series.

Colby Hammer's first inning double drove in Trevor Marsh for Post 45's only run.

Starter Braxton Davis gave up the four runs in four innings of work and took the loss. Matthew Brewer (1.1 innings) and Hunter Hill (1.2 innings) threw scoreless ball in relief.

Both teams have 1-1 records in the ALWS with one game left in pool play. Fargo plays Shrewsbury, MA (0-2) at 4:00 Sunday followed by Randolph County vs. Idaho Falls, ID (2-0) at 7:30.

August 16, 2019 – AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

Trevor Marsh picked up where he left off in the Mid-Atlantic Regional with a 3 for 4 night in Post 45's opening win in the American Legion World Series. Marsh had a double, rbi and scored two runs in Randolph County's 8-4 win over Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

Easton Morgan was 2 for 4 with a run scored, Braxton Davis hit a solo home run and Randolph also got hits from Spencer Lanier (run) and Austin Curry (rbi).

Dawson Davis got the win in relief of starter Bryson Hamlet. Davis pitched an inning and two-thirds before giving way to Trevor Marsh who pitched the seventh inning.

Friday is an off day for both teams. Shrewsbury returns to action Saturday against Idaho Falls at 1:00. Randolph County will play Fargo at 4:00 Saturday.

August 14, 2019 – AMERICAN LEGION SOFTBALL

Cumberland County went undefeated in the 2019 State Championship Tournament, coming from behind to defeat Alamance County 8-2 in the championship game at Cleveland Community College.

Cumberland Post 32 defeated Alamance Post 36 on the opening day of the tournament for the Eastern North Carolina Championship by scoring nine runs in the final innings for an 11-4 win. In the championship game, Post 32 scored a run in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie then broke the game open with a 5 run top of the seventh and held on for the win.

August 14, 2019 – AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

Due to thunderstorms forecast for the Shelby area Wednesday afternoon, the 'Host City Welcome' events which normally take place in and around the downtown area have been moved to Cleveland Community College. Some of the planned events have been canceled and others are no longer open to the public due to space restrictions and will only be available to members of the participating ALWS teams.

Baseball begins Thursday with all eight teams in action. Randolph County Post 45 will take on Shrewsbury, Massachusetts Post 397 in the final game of opening day. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

After an off day Friday, Post 45 plays at 4:00 Saturday afternoon against Fargo, North Dakota.

A change has been made to the Post 45 schedule for Sunday. Instead of an afternoon game as was on the original schedule, Randolph County will play Idaho Falls, Idaho at 7:30.

August 13, 2019 – AMERICAN LEGION SOFTBALL

Tomorrow's final day schedule in the 2019 Lady Legion State Tournament is set with Alamance Post 63 facing Davidson Post 8 in a 10 AM elimination game. The winner will face Cumberland Post 32 in the championship round at 1:00.

Cumberland has not lost in the double elimination tournament and is the team that put both Alamance and Davidson into the loser's bracket.

The tournament is being played at Cleveland Community College in Shelby.

August 13, 2019 – AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

The City of Shelby will welcome teams to the 2019 American Legion World Series with the annual Host City Welcome, a street festival held the day before the games begin at Keeter Stadium.

The eight Regional Champions will be welcomed by local officials, compete in a cornhole tournament and receive commemorative medallions recognizing their achievement in reaching the ALWS.

Festivities begin at 5:15 pm Wednesday with music around the uptown Shelby area numerous restaurants to choose from.

Randolph County will return to the American Legion World Series for a third straight year after winning the Mid-Atlantic Region Sunday at McCrary Park.

Post 45 will be in the 'Stripes Division' when pool play begins Thursday at Keeter Stadium in Shelby. Also in that pool of teams will be Idaho Falls, Idaho; Shrewsbury, Massachusetts; and Fargo, North Dakota.

The 'Stars Division' will consist of Destrehan, Louisiana; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Festus, Missouri; and Danville, Illinois.

Shelby is also hosting the North Carolina Lady Legion Softball State Championship this week. Alamance Post 63 from Area 3 as well as neighboring Davidson Post 8 will be in action today when the double-elimination tournament begins at Cleveland Community College.

The 2019 State Champion will be crowned Wednesday afternoon.

Post 45 won their third straight Regional Championship Sunday at McCrary Park with two hard-fought wins against the Virginia champions Vienna Post 180.

Having suffered a 6-2 loss to Vienna in the double-elimination tournament on Thursday, Randolph County had to win two games against Post 180 while Vienna needed just one win to earn that program's first regional title.

Trevor Marsh got his first start of the season for Post 45 in the first game of the afternoon and delivered a beautifully pitched complete game shut out to give Vienna their first loss in the tournament. Marsh was supported by an errorless defensive effort and he contributed at the plate with a double and a home run.

Braxton Davis pitched six innings in the final game of the regional and earned the win with two runs allowed on six hits. Tatum Marsh pitched the seventh inning for Post 45 and got the save.

Trevor Marsh was named the Most Valuable Player of the Mid-Atlantic Regional with outstanding efforts pitching, hitting and in the outfield. Marsh pitched in three games with a 2-0 record and drove in 10 runs with eight hits which included two doubles and two home runs.

After winning the Southeast Regional each of the last two years, Randolph County will make their third straight appearance in the American Legion World Series as the 2019 champion of the Mid-Atlantic Regional. The ALWS begins Thursday in Shelby, NC.

Post 45's first game will be against Shrewsbury, Massachusetts Post 397 at 7:30 Thursday night.

August 5, 2019 – AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

The 2019 American Legion Mid-Atlantic Regional begins Wednesday at McCrary Park in Asheboro. The schedule calls for four games Wednesday and Thursday, three games Friday, two on Saturday and championship Sunday will feature one or two games.

Action begins Wednesday morning at 9:30 with Middletown, Delaware facing Morgantown, West Virginia followed by Vienna, Virginia against Brooklawn, New Jersey at approximately 12:30. The second session begins at 4:30 with Funkstown, Maryland against Wilmington, North Carolina and the final game on day one will match Hamburg, New York against the host team, Randolph County.

Ticket options include a tournament pass (good for every game) for $40. Tickets for each two game session are $12 and a ticket to the single game at 12:30 Friday is $6.

August 4, 2019 AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL - UPDATED

Morgantown Post 2 has won the West Virginia Championship and will represent The Mountain State in the Mid-Atlantic Regional.

Rain has delayed the West Virginia State Tournament by one day. The decisive title game between Berkely and Morgantown is scheduled for noon Sunday at Potomac State College. The winner will join seven other teams when the 2019 Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament begins Wednesday at McCrary Park.

August 1, 2019 FALL SPORTS

August 1st marks the beginning of the Fall sports season for public schools in North Carolina. Today is the first day of practice with regular season contests allowed the week of August 19th.

The eight public schools in Randolph are expected to field more than 50 varsity teams in seven sports.
