October 27, 2019 – STATE PLAYOFFS
High School State Championships in women's golf will take place Monday and Tuesday on various courses in the Pinehurst area. Riley Hammer (AHS) will be in the 3A championship field for the second time along with Blue Comet teammates Emma Haywood and Salem Lee. Hailee Cagle (SWR) also qualified for the two-day finals which will be contested on the Red Course at Foxfire Resort near Jackson Springs.

Seven of the eight public school volleyball teams qualified for the state playoffs and five of those advanced to the second round.
Saturday saw the Mid-Piedmont third place team, Asheboro, eliminated 3-2 by Southern Alamance which finished second in the conference. Providence Grove traveled to McMichael High School where the Patriots were eliminated by the Mid-State 2A Conference Co-Champions.
Southwestern Randolph, Wheatmore and Uwharrie Charter will host second round volleyball matches Tuesday. Randleman and Trinity will travel.

This is the final week of the regular season for men's soccer. Seeding for the soccer playoffs will take place on Monday, November 4 with first round matches scheduled for Wednesday the 6th.

Cade Snotherly completed touchdown passes to Tavis McAdoo, J B Farrish and two to Kaemen Marley to lead the Wildcats. McAdoo and Demetrius Thomas also rushed for scores.
Ben Walker scored twice for the Warriors, a 35 yard pass from Nick Halo tied the game at 7 in the first half and a 29 yard interception return for a fourth quarter score. Halo also connected with Zach Berrier for a touchdown in the final quarter.
Providence Grove 21, TW Andrews 14
The Patriots rushed for 197 yards and passed for 134 yards in the win.
Caleb Rogers carried for 138 yards and a TD and caught 1 pass for 30 yards and a TD. Luke Thomas was 7 for 14 passing for 134 yards and two touchdowns, the second to Jacob Marcrum (2 catches, 53 yards). Cam Way had 2 catches for 21 yards. Drew Needham added 35 rushing yards on 6 carries.

Caleb Greene scored a rushing touchdown for Trinity while Travis Oxendine led with 32 yards rushing.
Randleman got 135 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns from Naheim Lilly, 91 yards and 2 rushing scores from Jaquan Snipes and 74 rushing yards from Chandler Norfleet. Dawson Edwards recovered a fumble and returned it for a Tiger score.

October 24, 2019 – VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS
Southwestern Randolph, Wheatmore, Randleman and Uwharrie Charter Academy will host first round volleyball matches Saturday in the 2019 state playoffs. Asheboro, Trinity and Providence Grove will begin the playoffs on the road. Times to be announced.
From the Mid-Piedmont Conference, the Cougars will host Charlotte Catholic in the 3A west region. Asheboro will face MPC opponent Southern Alamance in the east region. Also from the Mid-Piedmont, Southeast Guilford will travel to Gray's Creek High School.
Wheatmore is the top seed in the 2A east region and opens against #32 seeded Richlands High School. Also in the east region are Randleman which hosts Farmville Central, the Trinity Bulldogs who travel to West Craven and Providence Grove which has a road match at McMichael.
Uwharrie Charter will host River Mill Academy in a 1A east matchup. Chatham Central is also in that region with a road game at Weldon. In the 1A west, YVC teams include Gray Stone Day, South Stanly and North Stanly.

WOMEN'S GOLF – REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS
Hailee Cagle from Southwestern Randolph along with Riley Hammer, Salem Lee and Emma Haywood from Asheboro qualified for the 3A State Championship Tournament next week on the Foxfire (Red) course.
Cagle shot 91 in the regional at Greensboro National and finished in a tie for 9th place. Hammer and Lee finished tied for 16th with a 94 score. Haywood shot 95 and finished tied for 20th.

Kara Comer, a 10th grader at Wheatmore High School, will face Oak Grove's Jessica Fuchs in the first round of the 2A State Championship Tournament this Friday. The winner will advance to the quarterfinal round later Friday at Cary Tennis Park. Semi-finals and championship rounds will take place Saturday.

October 20, 2019 – POSTSEASON TOURNAMENTS
Conference volleyball tournaments begin Monday for county teams with first round matches played at higher seeds. The conference champions in the Mid-Piedmont 3A – Southwestern Randolph, and in the Piedmont Athletic 2A – Wheatmore, have first round bye's and will begin play Tuesday. Uwharrie Charter Academy won the nine-member Yadkin Valley Conference this season.

Regional tournaments are scheduled for Monday in women's golf. Golfers from Providence Grove and Wheatmore will be playing in the 1A/2A Central Regional at Sapona Golf Club near Lexington while Asheboro and Southwestern golfers will be at Greensboro National Golf Club. The top 17 scorers from each regional (using playoff of tie-breaker if necessary) will advance to the state championship tournaments next week.

Nahiem Lilly rushed for 212 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Tigers Friday night. Jaquan Snipes carried for 86 yards and a touchdown and Harrison Moffitt rushed for 44 yards and a score. Coby Price threw a touchdown pass to Dominick Poole as part of his 111 yard passing night.
The win was Shane Handy's 90th victory as head coach of the Tigers.
Southern Guilford 37, Asheboro 21
Dyvon McKinney rushed for a touchdown and Khyland Hadley-Lindsay threw for two others but Asheboro could not keep up with the second half downpour of Southern Guilford. Isaiah Jackson caught the first scoring pass to tie the game at 7-7 in the second quarter before McKinney put the Blue Comets up 14-7 with his rushing score on Asheboro's next possession.
After halftime however, the Storm scored 30 straight points before Hadley-Lindsay connected with Jai Mason for the final score in the game.
Providence Grove 42, Wheatmore 7
The Patriots rushed for 288 yards and 6 touchdowns in the home win Friday night. Caleb Rogers had 24 carries for 137 yards while Drew Needham (3 TD), Luke Thomas (2 TD) and Travis Boone (1 TD) finished off the drives.
Thomas was 9 for 16 passing for 123 yards. Cam Way had 3 catches for 33 yards. Rogers caught 2 passes for 52 yards.
Jordan-Matthews 12, Trinity 0
Chandler Shell was 5 for 12 passing for 97 yards, Landon Carter had 2 catches for 73 yards and Brandon Wagner had 37 yards on 10 carries but the Bulldogs were unable to find the end zone. A touchdown was nullified by a penalty and the Jets defense held on 4th and goal late in the first half.

The women's tennis team from Wheatmore High School will host McMichael High School Wednesday in the first round of the Dual Team Playoffs. The Warriors finished as champions of the Piedmont Athletic Conference with a 15-2-1 record.
Individual players who have qualified for the playoffs should be announced late today or Tuesday morning.

Conference Tournaments will take place this week in women's golf with regional tournaments scheduled for next week.
The Mid-Piedmont Conference tournament is scheduled for Monday at Forest Oaks Country Club in Pleasant Garden. The 3A Central Regional Tournament will be held at Greensboro National Golf Club on Monday, October 21.
Last season, Trinity and Providence Grove fielded teams (minimum three golfers) in the Piedmont Athletic Conference. This season, those schools were joined by Eastern Randolph and a golfer from Wheatmore. Those golfers who qualified will advance to the 1A/2A Central Regional Tournament at Sapona Golf, Swim & Tennis Club in Lexington, also on Monday, October 21.

The 2019 regular season is complete for most area teams in women's tennis.
Conference Tournaments will take place this week with the state playoffs beginning Wednesday, October 16 for qualified teams and individual regional tournaments on Friday, October 18.
Both the Piedmont Athletic 2A and the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference tournaments are scheduled for Tuesday at Jordan-Matthews and Asheboro, respectively. Some Yadkin Valley 1A teams have regular season games scheduled for the first part of the week leading up to the two-day conference tournament at Chatham Central on Wednesday and Thursday.

Jaquan Snipes rushed for 156 yards and Naheim Lilly carried for 188 and each scored twice for the Randleman Tigers. Dawson Edwards carried for a score while Snipes scored a third time on a pass from Coby Price. Dominick Poole caught 2 touchdown passes from Price as the Tigers improved to 6-0 overall, 2-0 in the Piedmont Athletic Conference.
Luke Thomas threw for 209 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Patriots (4-3, 0-2). Questin Overman had 64 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. Jacob Marcrum had 80 receiving yards and a TD. Cam Way had 3 catches for 66 yards.
Drew Needham had 16 carries for Providence Grove and scored a touchdown.

Nick Halo passed for 3 touchdowns - two to Zach Berrier and the third to Austin Biggs - as the Warriors (3-4, 1-1) snapped a four game losing streak. Halo also caught a touchdown pass from Gabe Hernandez. Biggs also scored on the ground, Garrett Moser rushed for 2 touchdowns and Bailey Owens notched a 27 yard field goal.
Tucker Case led the Bulldogs (0-6, 0-1) with 50 yards rushing. Chandler Shell and Caleb Green saw action for Trinity in place of quarterback Travis Oxendine who was out for this game.

October 4, 2019 – ASHEBORO HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Asheboro High School has announced that one individual and one team have been selected for
enshrinement to the AHS Athletics Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame Class of 2019 consists of: The 1975 Baseball team and, Ken Morgan – football and basketball player from the AHS Class of 1969.
The 1975 Baseball team won a State Championship participating in the Western North Carolina Activities Association (WNCHSAA) and is recognized as one of the best baseball teams in AHS history.
Ken Morgan was an outstanding athlete who excelled as lineman for the Blue and White. Morgan went on to Elon University (College), was selected All-Southern Conference, and was drafted by the Denver Broncos. Mr. Morgan will be honored posthumously.
The Induction ceremony is open to the public and will take place on Friday, October 4, in the AHS Gymnasium. The HOF class will be presented to the public at halftime of the AHS football game against Southern Alamance.
The Hall of Fame began in 2004. With the Class of 2019, ninety-six individuals and teams have been enshrined.
