April 30, 2020 – NCHSAA SPRING MEETING
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors meeting concluded Wednesday, April 29 via a virtual platform. Among the decisions made during the two day event were:
* Declared all basketball Regional Champions at the time of the athletic shut-down to be co-champions of the 2020 State Basketball Championships.
* Acknowledged the State Board of Education's decision to allow academic eligibility for the fall 2020-2021 semester for any student who meets local promotion standards.
* Approved an adjusted contact definition and new contact limitations in football.
* Approved adjustments to soccer overtime rules and playoff scheduling.
NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker stated that the COVID-19 crisis was discussed at length during the meeting but the Association, like everyone else, is waiting through the current restrictions.
“We remind our schools, coaches and teams that we are acting as if we are in a "dead period" for all in-person activities. These restrictions remain in place until further notice. Virtual communication and activities to maintain relationships within teams is encouraged, but no in-person activities are permitted.
We understand that many people are interested in how schools and teams can get back to workouts, practices and competition. At this time, it is premature to speculate on a return date and whether or not the fall season will be impacted by COVID-19. We will continue to listen to the advice and mandates of our state's governor, Department of Health and Human Services, and medical advisors to inform our decisions going forward. Any decision made by the Board of Directors and Staff at a future date will be guided by those sources of information, erring on the side of health and safety. We will do our part to ensure health and safety for all of our athletes, coaches and communities."
- Que Tucker, NCHSAA Commissioner

April 17, 2020 – SUMMER BASEBALL
Thursday night, Greg Suire, one of the organizers of NC 3 American League Baseball, told SportsTone's On The Ball that at least half a dozen area teams are committed to organizing for the summer. Those teams are located inside the existing “footprint” of American Legion's Area III which will not be active this year.
Suire, owner of the Hi-Toms CPL franchise which has sponsored the Post 87 American Legion team for the past several years, said that NC3 was a partnership between the teams in order to get young players back onto the diamond as conditions allow. The league is still developing but Suire said representatives from Randolph County, Greensboro, Lexington-Davidson, Mocksville-Davie and Stokes County, along with High Point-Thomasville, have set goals for organizing teams for the season. He also mentioned Rowan County, Concord, Kannapolis and Stanly County as having expressed interest in the league.
Ronnie Pugh of the Randolph County team told SportsTone that Fuquay and Wayne County have already been in contact about games and that Shelby, Cherryville and Martinsville, Virginia were interested if those locations are able to participate in 2020.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has not ruled out more spring sports but, if high school sports do not return in May, and if those other areas of North Carolina are able to join in the new summer league, Suire said it's possible that the new league might offer the only State Championship in baseball this year in North Carolina.
Team representatives will decide on May 15 if they can begin play on June 1 based on North Carolina's health guidelines and social distancing restrictions. If not, the representatives will decide on June 1 if they can begin play on June 15 or decide on June 15 if the season can begin on July 1.

According to Ronnie Pugh, head coach of Randolph County Post 45, the NC 3 Baseball League will feature league games among teams which have been playing in Area III and may include non-league games against teams from across North and South Carolina. Plans also include an all-star game and playoffs as well as a schedule for junior teams.
The start date for games will be determined based on the relaxing of restrictions with potential starting dates including June 1st, June 15th or July 1st.

April 14, 2020 – AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL & SOFTBALL
When The American Legion announced the cancellation of this summer's national baseball events – Regional Tournaments and the ALWS - they left decisions about other competition to the individual Departments (States).
Last week the NC Legion Baseball Committee recommended to the North Carolina Department Executive Committee (DEC) the date of May 15 for a final decision about 2020 Legion Baseball in North Carolina.
However, the Department Executive Committee voted Monday to cancel all youth programs for the spring and summer, including baseball and softball.
NC State Baseball Commissioner Mark Cauble let teams know in an email Monday that “As of today all youth programs for the 2020 spring and summer [have] been canceled. The DEC voted unanimously to cancel.”
This means no American Legion baseball or softball this summer and, for the first time since American Legion Baseball in North Carolina began recognizing a State Champion in 1928, there will not be a baseball champion crowned in 2020.

Citing the uncertainty of health and safety conditions for players and fans, scheduling for the season and the availability of playing facilities - most of which are currently closed with no known date to reopen, the Americanism Commission, in consultation with the National Commander, made the announcement in a press release today.
