 January 26, 2021 – MID-PIEDMONT ALL-CONFERENCE The Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference announced All-Conference awards for an abbreviated list of sports due to the pandemic-altered scheduled for this year in school sports. Recognition for outstanding play during the fall sports season included athletes in cross country and volleyball. In men's cross country, Seth Hydzik of Asheboro was selected All-Conference. In volleyball, Southwestern Randolph's Darby Kennedy was named Coach of the Year for a third straight year while Co-Player of the year honors went to Diamond McDowell from Asheboro and Payton Shiflet from SWR. Other players named All-Conference in volleyball were Kaylen Nance and Ashton Maness from Asheboro along with Peyton LeRoy, Anna Kate Schiebel and Carleigh Whitson from Southwestern Randolph. 						The Providence Grove women's team finished 10th in the state with 5 of 7 runners making their first appearance in the championship race. Senior Olivia Frankel was competing in her fourth Cross Country Championship while junior Lily Butler was in her second. Wheatmore senior Katie Fritz improved her finishing position by 66 places over her first appearance last season. All of the Patriot men's team made their championship debut as Providence Grove finished 12th in the state. Wheatmore seniors Cole Huggins and Finn Owen returned for a second year with Huggins improving 79 spots over last season and Owen bettering his 2019 results by 64 positions. FROM WHS: Four individual qualifiers from Wheatmore ran in the NCHSAA 2A Cross Country Championship Meet on Friday 1/22.  Here are their finishes: 68th Cole Huggins 19:17 78th Finn Owen 19:40 58th Katie Fritz 23:50 75th Danae Henderson 25:03 This put a nice cap on the season as Finn ran well and Cole outpaced the #1 and #2 runners from the PAC-7 conference after chasing them for the entire season.  Katie ran her best time of the season and Danae set a personal record.  January 21, 2021 – CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS Nineteen Randolph County runners will compete this weekend in the Cross Country State Championships at Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville. Most of the local runners are from Providence Grove High School which placed both men's and women's teams in the 2A Championship. Wheatmore teams just missed qualifying but four Warrior runners qualified as individuals in the Friday afternoon championship races. Racing for the 2A women's title will be Patriot seniors Tia Meredith and Olivia Frankel, junior Lily Butler, sophomore Rori Frederick-Luther and freshmen Jensen Auman, Caroline DuVall and Sarah Majors. Wheatmore seniors Katie Fritz and Danae Henderson will also be competing in the 2A title event. Also from Wheatmore, seniors Cole Huggins and Finn Owen have qualified for the men's championship race along with Providence Grove runners Jacob Allen, Preston Ward, Nathan Majors and Adam Wilhoit – all seniors, junior Justin Busk and sophomores Robert Burton and Kaden Shoptaw, In the men's 1A Championship which will take place Saturday, Drew Capobianco will be representing Uwharrie Charter Academy. FROM WHS: Morgan Cunha, Danae Henderson, Lindsay Hazelwood, Cole Huggins, Jaxon Kimmons, and Logan Hanneman were recognized as All-Conference runners.  Katie Fritz was nominated to also receive All-Conference recognition since she was quarantined and therefore unable to run. Cole, Logan, Noah, Zach, Hayden, Lindsay, Danae, Allison, and Ellie set personal records for the Wheatmore course.  Abigail Moore set her all time personal record which rarely happens on the Wheatmore course. The top three finishing teams in the PAC-7 qualified to advance to the Mideast 2A regional in Cary on Jan 16 so Wheatmore should be in competition again then.
