#2 Wheatmore 5, #1 Pine Lake Preparatory 2

Wheatmore won their 49th consecutive match, a new state record.

The Warriors outscored the Pride 3-1 in the first half and 2-1 in the second half. Summer Bowman scored 3 goals and Ellie Garrison had 2 goals. Assists by Natalie Bowman (2) and Summer Bowman.

Wheatmore will defend their 2A State Championship against Manteo High School at UNC-Greensboro Saturday afternoon at 2:30.

The Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference has announced All-Conference awards for the spring sports season as well as Athletes of the Year Awards.

Among the Asheboro athletes recognized for their play Tanner Marsh was named Player of the Year in baseball, Valentino Mark is the MVP in Men's Track & Field sprint races and Rebecca Wilson was named MVP in Field Events in women's Track & Field.

Athletes of the Year in the Mid-Piedmont Conference for the 2022-2023 school year are senior Haley Long from Oak Grove High School and senior Nathan Carr from Ledford High School.

Sam Davidson (AHS '20) finished in a 4th place tie in the 2023 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship in Nicholasville, KY. The Guilford College team finished 7th in the championship.

Davidson and teammate Michael Vick were named to the All-Tournament team following the conclusion of the national tournament.

Louisburg College finished 4th in the NJCAA Division II Softball World Series in Spartanburg, SC. Edi Austin (PG '22) had 4 hits in the 5 games the Hurricanes played including a double and a home run.

Louisburg set school records this season including total wins and consecutive wins with Austin a big part of that hitting .389 with 28 home runs.


May 27, 2023 – NCHSAA AWARDS DAY

Among the annual awards presented by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association to coaches, officials and athletes is the award for Athletic Trainer of the Year. As stated in the linked article below, a program's athletic trainer's “expertise in injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation allows athletes to perform at their best, minimizing risks and maximizing their potential.”

The Elton Hawley Athletic Trainer of the Year award will be presented to Eastern Randolph High School athletic trainer Jana Webb to mark the “remarkable efforts and contributions” she has made in that field during the 2022-23 school year.

The 2023 NCHSAA awards ceremony will be held at Piedmont Hall, West Gate City Boulevard, Greensboro beginning at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 14.

It's a quiet Memorial Day weekend in Randolph County sports with Post 45 American Legion baseball having to postpone games due to the continuing renovations at McCrary Park. Post 45 is scheduled to host Davidson County Post 8 Thursday night but the status of that game is subject to change.

AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL SCHEDULE

The remaining high school schedule features Wheatmore women's soccer (23-0) traveling to Mooresville Tuesday to play Pine Lake Prep School (20-1-2) in the west region championship match. Wheatmore, defending state 2A champions, has tied the state record in women's soccer with 48 consecutive wins and looks to advance to the 2023 championship match with a win Tuesday.

Soccer championships in all four classifications will take place at UNC-G Soccer Stadium on Friday and Saturday, June 2nd and 3rd.

SPORTSTONE WOMEN'S SOCCER

Uwharrie Charter Academy baseball will be playing in the 1A Baseball Championship Series beginning Friday but the opponent and location have not been determined. The Eagles defeated Eastern Randolph for the West Region Championship and will play either North Moore or Voyager Academy. That eastern title series is tied 1 game apiece with a deciding game 3 scheduled for tonight Monday in Durham.

The other championship pairings have been decided and can be seen on the SPORTSTONE BASEBALL page.

LEGION BASEBALL

Randolph County 6, Chatham 5

A seventh inning rally by the home team fell 1 run short as the tieing run was left stranded at second base.

Hunter Atkins led Post 45 with 3 hits including a single, double and triple. Adam Cole had an rbi with 2 hits and scored twice. Tanner Marsh had 2 hits with an rbi and 2 runs scored. There were single hits by Tyler Parks (rbi), Drew Harmon (rbi), Carson Whitehead (run) and Alex Martinez.

Starter Connor Adams got the win allowing 2 runs (earned) on 3 hits with 6 walks and 5 strikeouts. Atkins gave up 1 hit and struck out 3 batters while Marsh allowed 4 runs on 4 hits and struck out 2 in relief.

Randolph County's next scheduled game is Thursday, June 1.

BASEBALL – 1A WEST REGION FINALS (GAME 2)

#2 Uwharrie Charter 8, #21 Eastern Randolph 1 (UCA wins series 2-0)

For the second straight game the Eagles took the lead in the sixth inning but instead of holding on to a 2-1 lead, UCA added 6 more runs in the seventh and advanced to the 1A State Championship series next week.

Eastern Randolph scored in the first inning after Pierce Leonard reached on a dropped third strike, advanced to second on a single by Ethan Frye and scored on a ground ball by Stratton Barwick. The Wildcats held the 1-0 lead through the fifth inning.

In the sixth, singles by Troy Carver and Grat Dalton, a walk to Ben Medinger and a sacrifice fly by Walker Wilkins added up to 2 runs scoring and a 2-1 lead for UCA. Then, in the seventh, 10 batters recorded 5 hits, a hit-by-pitch and a dropped third strike and 6 more runs.

UCA: Carver had 3 hits with an rbi and 2 runs scored. Two hits each for Dalton (2 rbi, run) and Caleb Stickle (2 rbi). Single hits by Medinger (triple, 2 rbi, 2 runs) and Jake Hunter (run). Hunter got the complete game win with 1 unearned run on 3 hits, 4 walks, 1 hit batter and 4 strikeouts.

ER: Frye had 2 hits including a double. Samuel Asbill had a single. Stratton Barwick pitched 6.2 innings giving up 8 runs (6 er) on 9 hits with 1 walk, 1 hit batter and 5 strikeouts. Lucas Smith recorded the final out in the top of the seventh.

WOMEN'S SOCCER – PLAYOFFS (ROUND 4)

#2 Wheatmore 2, #14 Community School of Davidson 1

The Warriors needed a come-from-behind win to keep their season going and, in doing so, tied the NC high school record with 48 consecutive wins.

The match was scoreless until the Spartans struck first with under 29 minutes to to in the second half. Wheatmore answered less than 5 minutes later for a 1-1 tie on a goal by Ellie Garrison. With just under 4 minutes on the clock, Garrison got in front of 2 defenders and put the winning shot into the net for her 92nd goal of the season. Summer Bowman had assists on both goals.

On Tuesday, the defending State 2A Champion Warriors travel to Pine Lake Preparatory School in Mooresville for the West Region Championship.

LEGION BASEBALL

Rowan County 3, Randolph County 2

Tied 2-2 with 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Rowan's ninth place hitter Emory Taylor drove in pinch hitter Zach McNeely for the game-ending run.

Randolph scored 2 runs in the top of the third for a 2-1 lead with Amare Godwin drawing a 2-out walk followed by a Tanner Marsh single. Hunter Atkins then reached on an error which allowed Godwin and Marsh to score Post 45's only runs. Along with Marsh, Adam Cole and Tyler Parks had hits.

Robert Garner pitched 4 innings before handing the tie game off to Drake Purvis who took the loss.


May 24, 2023 – EAST-WEST ALL-STAR GAMES

The North Carolina Coaches Association annual East-West All-Star games will be held July 17-19 in Greensboro.

Recently graduated athletes from across the state are selected to participate with a basketball doubleheader on Monday, July 17 (W-6:30, M- 8:30) at the Greensboro Coliseum. Soccer matches are scheduled for Tuesday, July 18 (W- 6:30, M- 8:30) MacPherson Stadium in Brown's Summit. The annual football game will be Wednesday, July 19 (8:00) at Jamieson Stadium.

Randolph County athletes selected to the 2023 teams include Gracyn Hall, Randleman and Brecken Snotherly, Eastern Randolph in women's basketball as well as Asheboro's Cristian Ortiz and Calvin Smith for men's soccer.

Uwharrie Charter Academy leads the best 2-out-of-3 game series 1 game to none with game two at Eastern Randolph at 7 pm Thursday.

UCA: Peyton McCollum had 2 hits with an rbi and a runs scored. Single hits for Troy Carver (triple, run), Walker Wilkins, Carter Brown (2 runs) and Jake Hunter.

Brett Smith pitched 5.2 innings allowing 3 runs (earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts. Logun Wilkins gave up 2 hits in the final 1.1 innings and got the win.

Randolph County broke open a 5-1 game with 9 runs in the top of the sixth inning to win their season opener for the fourth straight Legion season.

Braylen Hayes went 3-for-4 at the plate (2 doubles, 2 rbi, 2 runs) and Josh Meadows hit a 2-run home run for Post 45. Tanner Marsh (2 doubles, 2 rbi, 3 runs), Hunter Atkins (2 doubles, 2 rbi, 3 runs) and Adam Cole (2 rbi, run) had two hits each. Carson Whitehead had 1 hit and scored 2 runs.

Drew Harmon got the win giving up 1 run on 5 hits and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts in five innings. Robert Garner (1 walk, 1 strikeout) and Marsh (1 hit batter, 2 strikeouts) pitched 1 inning each.

Jensen Auman (2A Providence Grove, Jr) finished 13th in women's 1600 meter run.

Women's Team Championships in Track & Field went to Swain County (1A), Cummings (2A), Dudley (3A) and Cuthbertson (4A). Men's 2023 team champions are Union Academy (1A), T W Andrews (2A), Franklin (3A) and Weddington (4A).

Men's Dual Team Tennis finals were Saturday with Elkin (1A), Pine Lake Prep (2A), Hickory (3A) and Green Hope (4A) winning team championships.

Men's Lacrosse saw Lake Norman Charter win the combined 1A/2A/3A state tournament and Cardinal Gibbons won the 4A championship.

Draughn out-hit the Eagles 11-7 including an rbi single by Jackson Kirkley to tie the game at 4 in the top of the seventh. With 2 outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Lugun Wilkins walked, advanced to second and scored the winning run on a single by Carter Brown.

ER: Lanie McDaniel went 3-for-3 as the Wildcats recorded 10 hits. McDaniel scored on a hit by Ayanna Mears to give Eastern a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Addie Flinchum gave up 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 6 walks with 10 strikeouts.

#3 West Wilkes 2, #2 SW Randolph 1  (10 innings)

Maddie Varner drove in Jayden Alexander for a Cougar lead in the bottom of the third but a solo home run by West Wilkes pitcher Lily Proffit to lead off the fourth tied it up 1-1. After that, neither team got a runner past second base until the top of the tenth inning when the final run scored on a sacrifice fly by Leah Greene.

SWR: Single hits for Ky Perdue, Carleigh Whitson and Maddie Varner. Macie Crutchfield took the loss giving up 2 earned runs on 3 hits and 6 walks with 17 strikeouts.

Logan Zephir got the 5-inning win giving up just 2 hits and striking out 6 batters.

SWR: Maddie Strider drove in Alley Lowe with a 2-out single in the bottom of the second inning for the winning run. Ky Perdue, Maddie Varner and Liliegh Payne also had hits in a game controlled by the pitchers and excellent defenses.

WHS: The Warriors continued their undefeated season (20-0) with goals by Ellie Garrison (6), Summer Bowman (2) and Mikalah Walls. Assists by Natalie Bowman (4), Maggie Messner and Garrison.

Garrison's 6 goals expands on her new North Carolina record for goals in a season and she now leads the nation in scoring with 84. The old NC record of 77 goals in a season was set by Garrison last year.

RHS: The Tigers recorded 5 home runs with a solo shot by Seth Way and 2 each from Hunter Atkins (Grand Slam and solo) and Austin Lemons (2-run and solo). Atkins also had 2 singles in a 4-for-4 night. John Kirkpatrick had 3 hits and Chesney Welch 2 hits including the game-ending double in the sixth inning. Lemons pitched 5 innings for the win (2 hits, 7 strikeouts).

UCA: Two hits each for Caleb Stickle (2 rbi, run), Grat Dalton (rbi, 2 runs), Jake Hunter (2 rbi, run) and Troy Carver (double, 2 runs). Walker Wilkins added a hit, 2 rbi and 1 run.

Hunter pitched 5 innings of shutout ball and got the win (1 hit, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts). Stickle and Carver also saw time on the mound.

AHS: The Blue Comets got home runs from Tanner Marsh (2 hits, double, 2 rbi, 2 runs) and Cohen Caviness (rbi, run) but couldn;t slow down East Rowan. Davis Gore (double, rbi, run) and Amare Godwin also had 2 hits. Adam Curry had 1 hit with 1 run scored.

Gore pitched 5 innings (8 runs (7 er), 9 hits, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts) and Chandler Macon worked 1 inning (3 earned runs, 6 hits, 1 strikeout).

SWR: Ky Perdue was 3-for-3 with an rbi and 3 runs scored to lead the offense. Single hits by Madelyn Smith (run), Maddie Varner (2 rbi), Caressa King (run), Alley Lowe and Lileigh Payne (double). Macie Crutchfield walked 1 and struck out 14 in the no-hitter.

PG: Emma Mazzarone took the loss giving up 2 earned runs, no walks and 13 strikeouts.

ER: Ziera Watson (rbi, 2 runs) and Addie Flinchum (2 doubles, 2 rbi, run) had 3 hits each. Two hits apiece for Skylar Pugh (Grand slam, 4 rbi, run), Lanie McDaniel (rbi), Ayanna Mears (3 runs) and Dori Luther.

Flinchum gave up 2 hits in the win with 2 walks and 15 strikeouts.

May 11, 2023 – ALUMNI HONORS

Jessica McQueen (THS ' 21) was named the CIAA Women's Championship Track MVP following last week's Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship meet in Durham. The Fayetteville State sprinter was part of two winning relay teams (4x100 and 4x400) and finished 2nd in both the 200 and 400 meter dashes.

McQueen is a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Division II National Meet in Pueblo, CO beginning May 25.

Sam Davidson (AHS '20) was the individual medalist in the 2023 ODAC Men's Golf Championship leading the Guilford College Quakers to the program's 19th conference title.

Davidson and the Quakers will represent the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament in Nicholasville, KY beginning Tuesday, May 16.

Edi Austin (PG '22) has been named to the NJCAA Division II All-Region Team for District X (10). The Louisburg College infielder has accumulated 70 rbi in 60 games with a .402 batting average and is ranked third on the team and fifth nationally in home runs with 26.

The Hurricanes (58-2) are ranked #2 in NJCAA Division II and will travel to Region 8 Champion #20 Lake-Sumter State College (42-17) in a best-of-3 series for the South Atlantic District Championship beginning Friday (noon) in Leesburg, Florida.

Alex Coleman (SWR '21) has been named First Team All-Conference by the Sun Belt Conference after leading Marshall University - and the SBC - in hits (76) and runs scored (59) this season. Her 76 hits is tied for 5th most in Division 1 softball; 41 stolen bases is tied for 6th most; and Coleman's 1.13 runs-per-game is 10th nationally.

Bulla walked 1 and struck out 11 in the no-hitter.

Asheboro High School has named Kristen Faircloth as the new head softball coach. Faircloth is a graduate of AHS where she participated in softball, basketball and volleyball.

From the press announcement:

Faircloth was a two time All-Conference and All-County softball player as well as a recipient of the National Scholar Athlete Award. She was also awarded Ms. Blue Comet her senior year at AHS. Throughout her softball career, Faircloth was fortunate enough to have played for Coach Lisa Robertson for seven years.

Once she graduated college, Coach Faircloth moved back home to teach at Donna Lee Loflin Elementary and began her coaching career as an assistant to Coach Robertson.

After teaching at Loflin, she moved to AHS where she is finishing her tenth year of teaching and coaching. Faircloth has also been the head coach of middle school softball for the Blue Comets for the past four years.

From AHS: The Blue Comet ladies battled hard for 79 minutes and 13 seconds before Tess Moody beat the keeper on a breakaway - after a beautiful through ball from Madison Luck – for a 1-0 lead with 47 seconds left.

Natalie Flores, kept Ledford on their toes taking 5 shots on goal. Itzel Macias, Karen Cox, Samantha Goicochea and Natasha Mederos helped goal keeper Carlisle Dozier secure the win. Carolina Castro Perez, Penny Smith and Jaira Arellano added solid play to the attack.

Dozier had 7 saves in goal for the Blue Comets.

Two Uwharrie Charter Academy seniors signed with university basketball programs this week.

Ashton Troutman has signed with Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN.

A two-time All-District and three-time All-Conference player, he was a +1000 point scorer for the UCA Eagles. Troutman will join the Carson-Newman Eagles in the South Atlantic Conference.

Ashara Spruill has committed to Texas Southern University in Houston, TX to continue her academic and athletic career. Twice named to the Piedmont Athletic All-Conference team, Spruill was selected as an All-District player following her senior season after leading the Eagles in points, rebounds, assists and steals.

The TSU Tigers compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

BASEBALL – CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINALS

#1 Ledford 14, #4 Asheboro 3 (MPC Semi-final)

AHS: The Blue Comets totaled 3 hits, one each by Cohen Caviness (rbi), Chandler Macon (2 rbi) and Adam Curry. Davis Gore took the loss and was followed on the mound by Macon and Sam Gore.

#3 Oak Grove 5, #2 North Davidson 2 (MPC Semi-final)

#2 Trinity 4, #3 Uwharrie Charter 0 (PAC Semi-final)

THS: Landon Mowery had a solo home run and Brody Little hit his first varsity homer, a 2-run shot. Cade Hill went 3-for-3, Gage Griffiths had 2 hits and single hits for Jake Little (triple) and Ethan Willard (rbi). Andon Simmons got the shutout win giving up 2 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts.

UCA: Peyton McCollum had the 2 hits, including a triple. Logun Wilkins took the loss going 4 innings and giving up 3 runs (2 er) on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts. Brett Smith pitched the final 2 innings (1 earned run, 2 hits, 2 strikeouts).

#1 Randleman 4, #4 Providence Grove 3 (8 innings)  (PAC Semi-final)

RHS: Seth Way had 2 hits, including a solo home run, with 3 rbi to lead the Tigers' hitting. Single hits by Jake Riddle, John Kirkpatrick (double) and Chesney Welch who singled in Shawn Miller in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the game. Way pitched six innings (3 runs (1 er), 6 hits, 3 walks, 10 strikeouts) before Austin Lemons took over and got the win (2 IP, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts).

PG: Four of the Patriot's six hits came in the fifth inning when the runs were scored. Jayten Beasley and Logan Fox (rbi) totaled 2 hits each. Single hits for Andrew Canter and Brady Collins (run). Beasley pitched 4.2 innings (1 run (earned), 2 hits, 2 strikeouts). JC Cruz worked 2.1 innings (2 runs (earned), 2 hits, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts) and Jacob Hart pitched the eighth and took the loss.

SOFTBALL – PAC TOURNAMENT

#4 Uwharrie Charter 6, #5 Randleman 3

UCA: Kenzie Hill went 4-for-4 with 2 rbi and a run scored. Kynley Brewer (triple, 2 runs) and Emory Johnson had 2 hits each. Gracie Smith had a triple and 2 rbi. Maddie Burrow and Kaitlyn West (rbi) also had hits. Logan Zephir pitched into the sixth and got the win. Molly Bulla earned a save.

RHS: Makenzie Roach had 2 hits and an rbi. Single hits by Jordan Booker (run) and Savannah Scott. Sarah Norton took the loss.

BASEBALL – CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTS

#4 Asheboro 4, #5 Central Davidson 3

AHS: Chandler Macon had 2 hits and scored a run while Tanner Marsh (2 rbi), Davis Gore (double, rbi), Adam Curry (double, rbi) and Amare Godwin (2 runs) had 1 hit each. Connor Adams struck out 8 against 4 hits and 2 walks to get the win.

#2 Trinity 7, #7 Eastern Randolph 5

THS: A five-run sixth inning helped the Bulldogs to the come-from-behind win. Seven players had a hit each with rbi by Landon Mowery, Andon Simmons, Brody Little and Jacob Proctor (double). Cade Hill got the complete game victory allowing 4 earned runs on 10 hits with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts.

ER: Two hits each for Stratton Barwick (home run, 2 rbi, run), Samuel Asbill (rbi, run) and Lucas Smith. Alex Kivette had a double and an rbi. Barwick pitched the complete game loss with 7 earned runs on 7 hits and 2 walks with 8 strikeouts.

#3 Uwharrie Charter 5, #6 Wheatmore 1

UCA: Ben Medinger had 2 hits (double, rbi, run) to lead the offense. Caleb Stickle and Jake Hunter also recorded hits. Troy Carver pitched 4 innings giving up 1 earned run on 3 hits for the win. Jake Hunter threw 3 innings with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.

WHS: Payton Mooney had 2 hits with single hits by Mason Rich (double, run) and Clay Hill (double, rbi). Mason Rich (3.2 IP, 5 runs (2 er), 4 hits, 3 walks, 7 strikeouts) took the loss. Parker Kines gave up a walk with 2 strikeouts in the final 2.1 innings.

#4 Providence Grove 10, #5 SW Randolph 9  (8 inn)

PG: Tyler Foust hit a solo home run in the third and Karson Bowman hit a 3-run homer to tie the game 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh. Lemuel Coltrane went 3-for-5 with a double, rbi and 2 runs scored in the Patriots come-from-behind win in extra innings. Andrew Thomas, JC Cruz and Andrew Canter saw action with Canter getting the win.

SWR: Adam Cole (double, rbi, 2 runs) and Tyler Parks (3 rbi, run) had 3 hits each. Landon Williamson had 2 hits including a home run with 2 rbi and 2 runs scored. Single hits by Grant Kirk (double, Zack Scruggs and Grant Little. Jonah Campbell, Ryan Jones and Grant Little spent time on the mound with Jones taking the loss.

May 1, 2023 – MEN'S DUAL TEAM TENNIS

Trinity, Southwestern Randolph and Uwharrie Charter Academy tennis teams have Qualified for the Team Tennis playoffs which begin Wednesday.

The Bulldogs (9-1) won the PAC Championship, received a #6 seed in the 2A West Region and will host #11 West Stokes (10-3). Trinity was last in the playoffs in 2019, defeating St Pauls High School before falling to NC Science & Math in the second round.

Southwestern Randolph (10-2) finished second in the PAC and received a 'wild card' spot as the #12 seed in 2A West and will travel to #5 Burns (11-1). The Cougar's last appearance was also in 2019 as the second team from the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference.

Uwharrie Charter got the automatic spot from the PAC in the 1A West and the #12 seeded Eagles will play at #5 Bishop McGuinness (9-4). UCA advanced to the second round in 2022.

Mid-Piedmont Conference Champion Central Davidson (9-1) is the #4 seed in the 3A West Region and will host #13 Franklin (10-4) in the first round.
