Manteo 5, Wheatmore 3
The two undefeated teams combined for 8 goals with 3 scored in the first 62 minutes of play and 5 in the final 18 minutes.
Both teams had several chances but the only goal before halftime came with just under 7 minutes to play when Summer Bowman put the Warriors ahead 1-0 off an assist by Elli Garrison.
Less than 2 minutes into the second half Manteo tied the game on a shot deflected into the goal but 2 minutes after that, Natalie Bowman put the ball in on a free kick to put Wheatmore back in front 2-1.
By the time Garrison recorded the next Warriors goal however, Manteo had scored 3 straight times starting with Championship Match MVP Kenzie Flynn on a penalty kick with 17:22 remaining. Manteo struck again at the 14:20 mark and again with 8:18 to go making the score 4-2.
Wheatmore made it 4-3 with 6:02 on the clock but the final score was another Manteo penalty kick for the 5-3 final score with 3:58 left to play.
The loss is Wheatmore's first since May 5, 2021, a state record streak in women's soccer of 49 consecutive wins.
Unofficially, 206 goals this season will beat the old record for most goals in a season (195) set by last year's Warriors and junior Ellie Garrison should account for 93 of those which tops her own state record of 77 goals scored last season.
