September 22, 2023 – MANAGEMENT OF HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
In March, 2022, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) and the North Carolina State Board of Education reached an agreement known as a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concerning how high school athletics in the state were to be administrated. That agreement was the result of various bills and votes in the North Carolina Legislature to make the administration of public school sports the responsibility of the state legislature.
The MOU had a lifespan of four years beginning with the 2022-23 school year.
Early this morning, the North Carolina House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 452 which would supersede the current arrangement if it becomes law and give most authority regarding high school sports to the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the North Carolina Board of Education beginning with the 2024-25 school year.
HERE IS THE RESPONSE from NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker.
The North Carolina Senate passed the bill about 10:30 this morning which will send it to Governor Cooper's office.
This is an on-going story.
