#5 Corvian Community 27, #4 Eastern Randolph 14

The Wildcats went 80 yards on the game's opening drive for a 6-0 lead but all four of Eastern Randolph's other first half possessions ended in turnovers which led to a 13-6 Corvian lead at halftime.

Cade McCallum connected with Rayden West for the first Wildcat touchdown on a 38-yard pass with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter. That ended an 11-play drive. In the third, Lucas Smith scored on a 1-yard carry with 1:47 remaining. The 2-point conversion run produced the final score.

Corvian's Kelvin Stinson intercepted a McCallum pass and returned it 33 yards for the Cardinals' first touchdown. Eastern Randolph's next possession ended with a fumble which Corvian recovered at the ER 23 and scored 6 plays later on a run by quarterback AJ Jackson.

Noah Best scored on the first play of the third quarter – a 66-yard touchdown, and Jackson carried the ball in from 30 yards out for his second score at the 5:47 mark in the third.

November 7, 2024 – Thursday Schedule

No contests scheduled. The NCHSAA will be seeding teams for the mens soccer playoffs today.

In the 3A west region Asheboro (22-2) is the #1 rated team in the RPI standings and should receive the top seed in the bracket. That guarantees home field advantage for the Blue Comets for as long as they continue winning up to the regional finals (round 5). Other Mid-Piedmont Conference teams expected to qualify are Ledford (12-7-4) and Montgomery Central (9-9).

Southwestern Randolph (20-2) is rated #1 in the 2A west region which should bring the same home field advantage to the Cougars that is expected for Asheboro. Randleman (15-7-2) tied SWR in the Piedmont Athletic Conference as co-champions. With a lower RPI (#10), the Tigers are the second team in from the PAC followed closely by #13 Trinity. Providence Grove (11-12-1, RPI #30) also hopes to qualify for the first time since 2016 as the fourth PAC team in the tournament.

Along with the 2A teams, Eastern Randolph (7-15, RPI #31) should receive an invitation as the top 1A team in the conference standings and Uwharrie Charter Academy (7-10, RPI #24) should be in as well.

(The RPI ratings are from Wednesday night and could change before the teams are seeded.)

SportsTone will have a Facebook Live video once the playoff match-ups are made available.

Ben Luck made 4 catches for 30 yards and Dallas Brinton had 2 catches for 39 yards.

Eastern Randolph 27, Randleman 26

The Wildcats rushed for 302 yards and all four touchdowns but the difference in the game was a 2-point conversion pass from Cade McCallum to Julian Brooks for what turned out to be the winning points.

Eastern Randolph struck first on an 11-yard run by Lucas Smith in the first quarter but the conversion run was stopped short and the 6-0 lead lasted just over a minute before Randleman responded with an 80-yard touchdown pass from John Kirkpatrick to Chase Farlow. Christian McLeod's pat kick put the Tigers in front 7-6.

On the following possession Farlow intercepted a McCallum pass which set Randleman up at midfield and led to a 2-yard run by Daylan Atkins and a 14-6 Tigers lead early in the second quarter.

Kobe Walker capped a 64-yard drive with a 38-yard touchdown run but Eastern's conversion attempt failed again and Randleman still led 14-12. All three plays were on the ground as the Wildcats rushing game got into high gear.

The Wildcat's Donnell Watson intercepted a Kirkpatrick pass and Eastern covered 75 yards in eight rushing plays finished off by Walker's 11-yard run. Joel Salinas converted the pat kick and the home team was back in front 19-14 in the middle of the second quarter. But in the final minute of the half Kirkpatrick completed a 20-yard scoring pass to Tyshaun Goldston. The Tigers conversion play failed which led to a 20-19 halftime lead by Randleman.

The final scoring took place in the fourth quarter as Lucas Smith ran the ball in and McCallum connected with Brooks for a 27-20 lead by Eastern Randolph with 4:42 remaining. Randleman scored on a 30-yard pass to Farlow with 2:36 on the clock but the pat kick to tie the score missed and Eastern Randolph was able to run out the clock.

Rayden West also recorded an interception for ER and Ashton Dillow recovered a fumble for Randleman. Kirkpatrick completed 14 passes for 232 yards and 3 Tiger touchdowns.

The win was Eastern Randolph's 20th consecutive conference win and earned the Wildcats their fourth straight PAC Championship.
