From WHS: Wheatmore cross country team traveled to Dobson for the Midwest 2A regional. The boys finished 14th in the region and our girls finished in 5th place.

New personal records were set by: Daylan Rada, Johnathon Wall, Jayden Grant, Jacob King, Scarlett Hildreth, Emmie Messner, and Paris Mallory.

Scarlett Hildreth qualified for the state meet as an individual so she will be running at Redmon Park in Kernersville next Saturday.

Asheboro 51, Ledford 35

Logan Loughlin was 11-for-14 passing for 215 yards and 3 touchdowns. Dallas Brinton made 5 receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown, Aiden Robinson had 2 catches for 42 yards and a score and Ben Luck had 2 catches for 3 yards and a score.

Brinton carried the ball 27 times for 197 yards and 2 touchdowns. DJ Scott and Qunicey Lee also score rushing touchdowns. Lee also intercepted a pass on defense and Trevor Cassidy recovered a fumble.

Micah Garcia was good on all 6 pat kicks and also added a field goal.

SW Randolph 42, Providence Grove 26

Brody Sheppard rushed for 3 Cougar touchdowns while Owen Whelan and Julian Mosley carried the ball in for one score each. Damon Mobley returned a blocked punt for a special teams touchdown.

Noah Stills passed for 138 yards and rushed for 113 in the win.

Jackson Lawver passed for 4 Patriot touchdowns. Jackson Rhyne caught three, including a 57-yard score, and Andrew Thomas had a 31-yard touchdown reception.

Eastern Randolph 49, Wheatmore 6

Eastern Randolph rushed for 162 yards and 4 touchdowns, Cade McCallum connected with Lucas Smith for a score and the Wildcats returned 2 interceptions for a defensive scores McCallum was 6-for-9 passing for 125 yards.

Lucas Smith rushed for 123 yards and Goodman caught 2 passes for 58 yards.

The Warriors were held to 26 rushing yards while Connor Benton completed 9 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown to Danny Craig who had 3 catches for 8 yards. Jonathan Kelly had 3 catches for 24 yards and 12 carries for 27 yards.

Trinity 21, Randleman 19

Zorn Williams scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter to put the Bulldogs ahead 7-6 and they never relinquished the lead.

Noah Bradley connected with Nazir Staten on a 5-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and Daniel Rogers carried the ball in for a score in the third and went ahead 21-12 after Abdul Sami's third pat kick.

The Bulldogs totaled 282 yards of offense to the Tiger's 275 yards.

John Kirkpatrick completed 16 of 30 pass attempts for 161 yards and a touchdown with one interception. Braydon Gladden caught 8 passes, including the 54-yard scoring play, for 116 yards. Tyshaun Goldston had 4 receptions for 46 yards and Chase Farlow 2 catches for 12 yards.

Kirkpatrick and Daylan Atkins had rushing touchdowns with Atkins leading the rushing attack with 9 carries for 37 yards. Christian McLeod hit 1-of-2 pat kicks.

Ty Moton recovered 2 fumbles but the Tigers also lost 2 along with the interception.

October 23, 2024PLAYOFFS

Providence Grove golfers lead off the championship season when the womens golf championships begin Monday.

PAC Champion Megan Oakley along with Aubrie Goodman and Anna Holloway will be competing in both team and individual scoring in the 1A/2A Championship at Sapona Golf Club in Lexington.

This is the first time Sapona Golf Club has hosted an NCHSAA Championship.

SPORTSTONE WOMENS GOLF

Providence Grove, Trinity, Wheatmore and Uwharrie Charter are still playing in the Womens Tennis Dual Team Tournament with matches scheduled for today. Trinity recorded their first ever win in the team playoffs Monday to advance to the second round.

Providence Grove's Audrey Frazier won the Piedmont Athletic Conference singles title and advanced through the regional tournament to the 2A Individual State Chamionship Tournament. The 2A title will be determined at Ting Park in Holly Springs beginning Friday.

SPORTSTONE WOMENS TENNIS

Runners from Asheboro, Providence Grove, Randleman, Trinity, Uwharrie Charter and Wheatmore will be at various cross country regional tournaments Saturday in order to qualify for state championship races scheduled for November 2.

Cross country runners from UCA will be competing in Kernersville, 2A teams in the PAC will be in Dobson and Asheboro will take part in the 3A Mid-west regional meet in Salisbury.

Logan Loughlin passed to Elijah Woodle for a touchdown and Aiden Robinson scored a rushing touchdown for Asheboro. Micah Garcia was good on both pat kicks and a field goal.

Loughlin was 7-18 passing for 69 yards and 2 touchdowns with an interception. Robinson had 3 catches for 25 yards. Woodle had 2 catches for 23 yards.

Connor Brinton had 29 carries for 116yards.

Eastern Randolph 57, Providence Grove 13

Cade McCallum connected with DeSean Shamberger on the first offensive play for the Wildcats for a 50-yard touchdown. Lucas Smith rushed for 4 scores, James Combs and Aiden Goodman scored rushing touchdowns and the defense put up points when Julian Brooks returned a fumble 12 yards for a score and Kobe Walker tackled Patriots quarterback Jackson Lawver in the end zone for a safety.

Providence Grove scored on a 49-yard fumble return by Holden Swift and on a trick play when Brady Collins passed to Lawver for a 14-yard touchdown.

Randleman 34, SW Randolph 14

Tyshaun Goldston and Micah Thurston scored two touchdowns each and John Kirkpatrick had a short rushing touchdown as the Tigers produced just over 400 yards of offense.

Kirkpatrick (6-for-13, 166 yards, 1 TD) connected with Goldston (4 rec, 88 yards) for 1 touchdown and Goldston (2 car, 81 yards) scored on a 49-yard run for his second touchdown. Micah Thurston had 11 carries for 42 yards and 2 touchdowns and Daylan Atkins added 7 carries for 78 yards. Kirkpatrick carried the ball in for a 2-point conversion and Christian McLeod and Chase Farlow made 1 pat kick each.

Brody Sheppard and Noah Stills each had rushing touchdowns for the Cougars and Asher Perkins made both extra point kicks.

Stills had 22 carries for 116 yards and Sheppard had 9 carries for 31 yards to lead the cougars on the ground. Stills completed 9 of 22 passes for 80 yards with 4 catches by Kempton Reed for 28 yards and 2 by Julian Mosley for 13 yards.

ER: Lucas Smith rushed for 164 yards and 3 touchdowns on 13 carries and James Combs had 4 carries for 61 yards. Cade McCallum was 7-of-9 passing for 126 yards with DaSean Shamberger grabbing 5 throws for 78 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Wildcats also got scores from Aiden Goodman on a 35-yard fumble return and a kick-off returned for a touchdown by Chance Holdaway. Joel Salinas was good on 7 pat kicks and Smith ran the ball in for a 2-point conversion.

THS: Noah Bradley connected with Nazir Staten on a 35-yard touchdown pass with an Abdul Sami pat kick in the second quarter. In the third, Cam Nelson recovered a Wildcat fumble and took it 44 yards for a score.

Bradley went 13-for-17 passing for 144 yards with Kha'dn Fuller grabbing 4 passes for 34 yards, Staten 3 for 47 yards and Leyland White 2 for 51 yards leading the offense.

SW Randolph 42, Wheatmore 12

WHS: Sophomore quarterback Connor Benton completed 16 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown to Bentley Mills as the Warriors running game was stymied by the Cougars defense.

Jonathan Kelly carried 11 times for 19 yards while Benton picked up 32 yards rushing including a 12-yard touchdown run. Danny Craig had 7 receptions for 129 yards and Bentley Mills 4 catches for 48 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Central Davidson 56, Asheboro 28

AHS: Logan Loughlin completed 11 passes for 149 yards, 1 touchdown with 2 interceptions. Elijah Woodle caught 5 passes for 92 yards and Dallas Brinton had 3 catches for 37 yards. Quincey Lee carried the ball 10 times for 46 yards.

Randleman 42, Providence Grove 10

RHS: John Kirkpatrick passed for 4 touchdowns with 3 going to Chase Farlow and 1 to Brayden Gladden. Daylan Atkins and Tristan Chriscoe had rushing touchdowns.

Atkins had 4 carries for 74 yards to lead the rushing attack. Kirkpatrick was 9-of-11 passing for 164 yards with 116 yards by Farlow. Gladden had 48 receiving yards.

PG: Carson Jones was good on a 36-yard field goal try and Jackson Lawver carried the ball into the end zone for the Patriots scoring.

Jacob Flinchum carried 13 times for 52 yards. Lawver completed 13 passes for 86 yards.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association has announced changes to the 2024 fall sports playoffs brought on by the disruption caused in western North Carolina by Hurricane Helene.

The changes vary from sport-to-sport from minor – the reporting deadline for womens tennis has been extended a few hours - to significant in the case of other sports with several changes to regional and state championship dates.

Change to the minimum number of rounds required to qualify. No changes to the playoff calendar.

Dual Team reporting deadline extended by 1 week. Playoffs delayed by 1 week.

   CROSS COUNTRY

Reporting deadline delayed 3 days. No change to regional or state championships.

Piedmont Athletic Conference Championship (Asheboro Memorial Park) – BRACKET

Trinity placed three Bulldogs in the PAC semi-finals but Patriot Audrey Frazier won the singles title for Providence Grove with a semi-final win over Jacey Wilson and a win in the championship match over Deanna Cobb. Cobb defeated teammate Karla Rios in the other semi-final.

Both Frazier and Cobb qualified for Mid-West Regional play by advancing to the conference championship and Wilson took the final singles playoff spot with a third-place win over Rios.

The Wheatmore tandem of Tatum Wagner and Arielle Turgeon won the PAC Doubles Championship over Caroline Farlow and Larson Kelly of Southwestern Randolph. Third place went to Abby Greeson and Caroline Tidwell of Providence Grove who defeated Trinity's Kayla Neam and Selina Arroyo in a regional qualifying match.

The 2A Mid-West Regional is scheduled for Friday & Saturday, October 18 & 19 at Pfeiffer University.

Mid-Piedmont Conference Championship (Asheboro Memorial Park) – BRACKET

For a second straight year, Helen Clodfelter of Ledford defeated Asheboro's Blair Thomas for the MPC Singles Championship (6-2, 6-1). Thomas advanced to the finals with a semi-final win over teammate Mady Adams (8-0) and Clodfelter defeated Riley Elliott of Central Davidson (8-0).

All four semi-finalists qualified for the Mid-West Regional tournament at Les Myers Park in Concord which is scheduled for Friday & Saturday, October 18 & 19.

In a tie-breaker match, Adams defeated Elliott for the third seed from the conference.

In doubles finals Emily Aguilar/Anassia Robinson of Montgomery Central defeated Malaika Khan/Charlotte Smith of Asheboro.

Khan & Smith reached the finals with a semi-final win over Garrison/Workman from Central Davidson while Aguilar & Robinson defeated Ledford's Hagee/Dunbar in the semi-finals.

Five doubles teams will advance to the regional tournament with Victoria Lockamy and Sara Davis from Oak Grove joining the four which reached the conference tournament semi-finals.

Runners from Randleman and Trinity competed at Hagen Stone Park in Pleasant Garden with Trinity's Kayla Franklin and Freddie Mercado of Randleman clocking in with the best times for Randolph County runners. Franklin finished 72nd of 127 competitors in the women's race and Mercado placed 61st out of 182 runners in the men's event.

Andrew Thomas caught two Patriots touchdown passes, one from Jackson Lawver (9-of-12 passing for 103 yards) and the other by Brady Collins (1-for-1 for 65 yards). Thomas had 2 catches for 78 yards and Jackson Rhyne made 3 catches for 36 yards while five other Patriots had one catch each.

Lawver scored twice on the ground with 7 carries for 90 yards. Jacob Flinchum rushed 12 times for 57 yards and a touchdown and Brady Collins carried 3 times for 10 yards and a touchdown. Carson Jones was 4-for-5 on pat kicks.

Defensively, Jase Locke recorded 2 sacks while Flinchum, Collins and Jameson Summey each had 1 interception. Flinchum also recovered a fumble.

Oak Grove 45, Asheboro 28

Logan Loughlin completed 10 passes for 258 yards and 3 touchdowns with scoring passes to Elijah Woodle (2-77 yards), Jewel Barrett-Riggins (3-50 yards) and Trevor Cassidy (1-48 yards). Quincey Lee had 1 catch for 60 yards, Dallas Brinton made 2 catches for 18 yards and Ben Luck a reception for 5 yards.

Connor Brinton carried the ball 24 times for 102 yards and a touchdown. Lee had 5 carries for 50 yards and recovered a fumble on defense.

Cade McCallum threw 5 touchdown passes and rushed for another in the Wildcat's win.

Rayden West had touchdown receptions of 34- and 30-yards; DeSean Shamberger scored on catches of 27- and 9-yards and Chance Holdaway caught a 24-yard touchdown pass. James Combs scored on a 1-yard run.

Lucas Smith carried for 121 yards in the first half and Eastern took advantage of 3 Cougar turnovers.

Randleman recorded 339 yards of offense with 250 through the air as John Kirkpatrick completed 14 of 20 passes with 4 touchdowns. Daylan Atkins carried 9 times for 58 yards and Triston Chriscoe 9 times for 43 yards. There was one fumble lost by Randleman.

The Tigers got two rushing touchdowns from Daylan Atkins on runs of 1 yard and 16 yards, receiving scores of 44- and 25-yards by Tyshaun Goldston (6-132 yards). Kirkpatrick also connected with Chase Farlow (3-68 yards) for a 55-yard touchdown and Brayden Gladden (4-43 yards) on a 19-yard scoring pass. Christian McLeod was 5-for-5 on pat kicks and made a 37-yard field goal to complete the scoring.

From SWR: Leading all golfers and earning medalist honors was SWR’s Dani Jaeck who shot a 44 to win the match by six shots. Lucy York finished fourth overall out of the 19 golfers, firing a 54.
