LEGION BASEBALL

Davidson County 5, Liberty 1

Davidson County played two games Sunday, falling to the Post 87 Hi-Toms 7-6 in a noon contest then facing Liberty in the evening.

Liberty fell behind thanks to a five-run third inning for Post 8 and managed to get on the scoreboard with a run in the seventh before the game ended with two more runners on base.

Liberty got a single from Logan Fox and doubles from Jayten Beasley and Bauer Bowling. Bowling's double led off the seventh inning and he eventually made his way in to score.

Beasley pitched the complete game and took the loss giving up 5 (earned) runs on nine hits and two walks and four strikeouts.

Post 81 finished the season with a 9-12 record.


June 29, 2024 – Saturday Results

LEGION BASEBALL

High Point 7, Randolph County 3

Post 87 managed to strand the bases full of Post 45 runners three times in the first four innings and rebounded from their Friday loss and stay in the northern division lead with three days left in the regular season.

Randolph County got single hits from Jake Riddle, Parker Kines and Caden Lasley who each scored a run. Grat Dalton had a hit and two rbi while Pierce Leonard had a hit and drove in one run. Clay Hill and Drew Harmon also had hits.

Brett Smith pitched five innings and took the loss giving up seven runs (4 er) on six hits, two walks and two hit batters. Connor Adams gave up one hit in one inning of relief. Smith and Adams each struck out one batter.

Randolph County 7, High Point 2

Randolph County closed to within one game of division-leading High Point with three games remaining. Post 45 and Post 87 play again Saturday and Tuesday and both also play third place Davidson County before the regular season ends.

Austin Lemons pitched into the sixth inning and got the win giving up two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five batters. Jake Riddle finished the game allowing one hit with one walk, a hit batter and two strikeouts.

Pierce Leonard and Drew Harmon had two hits each for Post 45. Leonard drove in three runs and Harmon hit a double and scored one. Riddle hit an rbi single, Clay Hill had a hit, Parker Kines singled and scored two runs and Caden Lasley drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, walked twice and scored twice. Grat Dalton and Tate Andrews walked and scored.

Davidson County 7, Liberty 1

Davidson County needs wins to remain in the chase for the two available playoff spots and came out swinging against Post 81 Friday night at Grady Lawson Field. Post 8 scored three in the first and two in the second for a 5-0 lead before adding single runs in the sixth and seventh.

Liberty had runners on base in every inning except the first but only managed one run. That came after Bauer Bowling drew a lead-off walk in the fifth and came in to score on a double by Will Stalker.

Ethan Lester led off the second inning with a hit, Stalker walked to lead off the third, Noah Lester singled to start the bottom of the fourth, Logan Fox walked to lead off the sixth and Chance Holdaway had a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Holdaway took the loss throwing 1.2 innings. Bowling pitched 2.1 innings and Noah Lester threw the final three.

Asheboro High School recently announced that Bradley Rudisill will be the school's next varsity baseball coach.

Rudisill is a graduate of Appalachian State University. His most recent coaching positions have been Davie County and Bunker Hill high schools.

Logan Fox and Noah Lester each had two hits and an rbi. Fox scored a run and Lester with a double. Grant Underwood also had a hit and he and Brodie Engle both scored after reaching by base-on-balls.

Jackson Berger pitched 2.2 innings and took the loss. Berger was followed on the mound by Noah Lester (1.1 IP) and Fox, in his first appearance, pitched the fifth inning.

Jake Little and Brodie Little were among four Post 87 players with multiple hits. Jake had an rbi-triple and scored while Brodie hit a double and scored twice. Ethan Willard walked and scored and Gage Griffiths reached after being hit-by-pitch.

Trailing by 12 runs in what could have been their last at-bat, Post 81 plated four runs to extend the game but ultimately came up short.

Eight players recorded hits including Cade McCallum (double, run), Ethan Lester, Will Stalker (run), Logan Fox, Noah Lester (rbi). Chance Holdaway (2 runs), Brody Engle (run) and Andrew Thomas (run).

Engle pitched the first two innings and took the loss. Ethan Lester pitched the third and Stalker worked into the sixth inning.

Randolph County 9, Liberty 3

Both teams scored in three innings but, after Liberty scored a run in the top of the second, Post 45 scored four runs in the bottom to take the lead. A Post 81 run in the fifth was followed by three for Randolph and then two more in the sixth before Liberty added one more in the top of the seventh for the final score.

Clay Hill and Samuel Asbill each had two hits with an rbi and Asbill scored one run for Randolph County. Grat Dalton drove in two runs with a hit, Drew Harmon had a double, walked twice and scored two runs. Tate Andrews had a hit, was hit by a pitch, intentionally walked twice and scored twice. Austin Lemons reached four time with a two-rbi triple and a bases-loaded walk and scored two runs.

Parker Kines gave up two earned runs on eight hits in five innings for the win. Kines walked one and hit one batter while striking out four.. Lemons pitched the final two innings with one unearned run, one hit and three strikeouts.

Noah Lester had three hits for Post 81, scored a run and drove in Logan Fox twice. Isaac Yates had two hits, Cade McCallum one hit with an rbi and single hits by Bauer Bowling, Jayten Beasley and Grant Underwood.

Jackson Berger started on the mound and took the loss with McCallum, Beasley and Noah Lester also spending time on the mound.

Grat Dalton doubled in Clay Hill for Randolph County's first run but by the middle of the fifth, St Mary's led 8-1.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, though, Pearce Leonard singled, Hill doubled, Caleb Stickle singled to drive in Leonard, Dalton reached on a gound-ball error which drove in Hill, Drew Harmon singled in Stickle and Dalton eventually scored on a wild pitch. The four-run inning got Post 45 to within 8-5 but they got no closer.

Harmon went 4-for-4 at the plate with an rbi. Dalton drove in two runs and scored twice. Hill had a double and also scored twice.

Samuel Asbill took the loss with four innings of work. Connor Adams, Austin Lemons and Clay Hill all pitched one inning.

Grat Dalton and Drew Harmon had two hits each for Randolph County with single hits by Caleb Dunn, Tate Andrews and Caden Lasley.

Drake Purvis pitched four innings and took the loss. Andrews worked the final three innings.

Morgantown WV 13, St Mary's (2) MD 3

Morgantown WV 9, Randolph County 6

Trailing 7-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, Post 45's first three batters reached on walks which set up rbi opportunities for Pearce Leonard (walk), Clay Hill (sacrifice fly), Caleb Stickle (ground-out) and Drew Harmon (2-rbi double) and cut the deficit to 7-5. But that was as close as Randolph County could get.

Caleb Stickle went 4-for-4 with an rbi, a run scored and a ground-rule double.

Brett Smith took the loss with four innings of work followed by three innings of relief pitching by Elijah Prince.

Wenkai Campbell had solo home runs in both of Morgantown's wins.

Logan Weidman held Garner to just four hits but Liberty couldn't match the runs and fell to the defending state champs at Campbell University.

Weidman gave up three (earned) runs in six innings on four hits, three walks and two hit batters with five strikeouts.

Isaac Yates, Ethan Lester and Weidman each had a hit for Post 81.


June 19, 2024 – Wednesday Result

Jake Riddle led the Post 45 offense with a 4-for-5 night at the plate including a triple and he scored three runs.

The game went seven innings with Randolph racking up 11 runs on 13 hits which are both season highs for the team. Caden Lasley, Caleb Stickle and Grat Dalton each had two hits and drove in runs with Dalton picking up three rbi.

Braxton Walker pitched 4.2 innings and got the win with 1 (unearned) run on 1 hit and 1 walk with 7 strikeouts. Elijah Prince (1.1 IP, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts) and Brett Smith (1 IP, 1 hit, 2 strikeouts) also saw action on the mound.

Post 45 scored the first four runs but Post 8 scored the final five including four runs in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off division win.

Randolph got hits from Clay Hill (2 runs), Caleb Stickle (rbi, 2 runs), Grat Dalton , Caleb Dunn and Trey Kennedy (3 rbi).

Jake Riddle followed Austin Lemons and Tate Andrews on the mound and took the loss.

Parker Kines threw 6.2 innings for the win giving up the four (earned) runs on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Jake Riddle recorded the final out and earned the save.

Pearce Leonard and Trey Kennedy had rbi singles for Post 45. Grat Dalton, Caleb Dunn, Braxton Walker and Tate Andrews singled and scored.

Bryson Marley took the loss giving up six runs (5 er) on 6 hits and 6 walks with 6 strikeouts in 6 innings of work.

Liberty had seven hits led by Marley who went 2-for-2 with a walk and scored twice. Andrew Thomas, Grant Underwood and Chase Collins had rbi singles with Logan Fox and Jackson Berger also recording hits.

Pearce Leonard had three hits and drove in one of Post 45's runs. Jake Riddle had a hit and scored twice. Clay Hill (double) and Caleb Dunn had hits and drove in runs. Drew Harmon tripled and scored and Caden Lasley had a hit with and rbi and a run scored.

Drake Purvis took the loss allowing three (earned) runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batter with three strikeouts in two innings. Samuel Asbill pitched five relief innings giving up four (earned) runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

Chatham County 4, Liberty 3

Chatham led 3-0 after two innings with Liberty only catching up after a sixth inning triple by Logan Fox and an rbi single by Shane Immel; then a 2-rbi hit by Isaac Yates drove in Fox and Bauer Bowling in the seventh. Post 292, however, got the walk-off win with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Yates went 3-for-4 at the plate for Post 81 with two rbi. Fox, Immel and Avery Wright had two hits each.

Jackson Berger pitched 5.1 innings giving up three (earned) runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Reliever Bryson Marley took the loss giving up one (earned) run on two hits in one inning of work.

Southwestern Randolph graduate Marcus Robertson has committed to Guilford Technical Community College to continue his academic and basketball career.

Randolph County 5, Chatham County 3

Post 45 broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fourth inning and won back-to-back games for the second time in the last five outings.

Four of their six hits and three rbi came from the top of the lineup with Pearce Leonard (1 hit), Grat Dalton (2 hits) and Clay Hill (1 hit) driving in runs after batters in the rest of the order reached base. Tate Andrews and Drake Purvis both singled and scored while Austin Lemons and Elijah Price reached on errors and scored and Parker Kines was hit by a pitch and scored.

Drew Harmon gave up three runs (2 er) in five innings for the win. Harmon allowed five hits and one walk and struck out eleven. Tate Andrews followed with two perfect innings to earn the save.


June 13, 2024 – Thursday Results

LEGION BASEBALL

Randolph County 6, Liberty 4 (8 innings)

Liberty struck first when Cade McCallum, Bryson Marley and Andrew Thomas each singled to load the bases in the third inning. A one-out walk by Bauer Bowling pushed across the first run followed by a single by Logan Fox which drove in two more for a 3-0 lead.

Randolph County tied the game in the fifth with the aid of a pair of errors, a walk and an rbi single by Clay Hill. Caleb Dunn also had his first double in the inning.

Post 45 plated three more runs in the eighth inning on Dunn's second double which drove in Jake Riddle who had doubled, Pearce Leonard who reached on an intentional walk and Clay Hill who had been hit by a pitch.

Shane Immel tripled in the bottom of the eighth and scored on a Chance Holdaway single before reliever Brett Smith struck out the final two batters to end the game.

Dunn and Leonard had two hits each for Randolph County with Leonard totaling three walks in the game.

McCallum had two hits for Liberty.

Austin Lemons pitched four innings followed by Smith who also pitched four innings and got the win.

McCallum followed Bauer Bowling (5.0 IP) and Andrew Thomas (2.0 IP) and took the loss.


June 13, 2024 – NCHSAA AWARD

The Pat Gainey Student Scholarships are awarded by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association each year to two seniors with at least a 3.2 GPA, a strong work ethic, a successful high school career and who have demonstrated respect for coaches and teammates.

Allie Popp from Southwestern Randolph was one of the recipients this year. According to the NCHSAA press release:

Popp played tennis all four years at Southwestern Randolph and was Academic All-Conference each year. Her senior year, she won the team Most Valuable Player Award as well as Conference Player of the Year and was a part of the Doubles Team that won the conference championship.

She was Southwestern Randolph’s CTE Presidential Scholar, a member of the Beta Club and scored Platinum on the WorkKeys Exam. She graduated first in her class and plans to study Neurobiology in college.

“Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Allie’s strength of character shines through in every aspect of her life,” said Tennis Coach Lori Lagrama. “She is a natural leader who leads by example, inspiring her teammates with her positive attitude, integrity, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Allie’s leadership extends beyond the tennis court, as evidenced by her involvement in various extracurricular activities and community service initiatives.”

Chatham County 7, Randolph County 4  (10 innings)

Chatham County jumped out to a 1-0 lead before rain brought a 30 minute delay in the bottom of the first inning. The lead went to 3-0 in the second inning but Caleb Stickle hit Post 45's first home run of the season – a 3-run shot – to tie the game after three.

The next scoring didn't happen until the ninth when both teams plated 1 run and the game continued to the tenth in a 4-4 tie. Chatham scored 3 runs in the top of the tenth and held off Randolph to take the win.

Parker Kines, Braxton Walker and Jake Riddle spent time on the mound with Riddle taking the loss.

Along with Stickle's home run, Riddle had 2 hits and scored a run, Clay Hill had a hit and scored twice and Caleb Dunn hit a double.

Liberty 12, Moore County 4

Scoreless after three, Liberty scored in each of the last four innings for the win.

Bryson Marley had 3 hits with 2 rbi and Logan Fox had 3 hits with a triple,1 rbi and 3 runs scored to lead the Post 81 offense. Jayten Beasley (rbi, 2 runs), Bauer Bowling (double, rbi, 3 runs) and Cade McCallum had 2 hits each.

Brody Engle pitched 3 perfect innings for the win. Chance Holdaway, Bowling and Noah Lester also saw time on the mound.


June 6, 2024 – PIEDMONT ATHLETIC ALL-CONFERENCE

The Piedmont Athletic Conference has announced All-Conference honors for the spring sports season along with Athlete of the Year awards.

Female Athlete of the Year is Ellie Garrison of Wheatmore High School. Even before her senior season exploits have been figured in, Garrison's name appears in the NCHSAA women's soccer record book more than a dozen times. Her (currently) unofficial career scoring total of 305 goals is 79 goals ahead of second place.

Male Athlete of the Year for the PAC is Dominic Payne of Trinity High School. Payne was the Conference Player of the Year in basketball, All-Conference in football and in Men's Tennis where he finished as runner-up in the PAC championship.

June 4, 2024 – ALL-STATE SOCCER AWARDS

The North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association has announced state-wide awards for the 2024 Women's Soccer season. Among the recipients are 25 Randolph County athletes who were named to All-Region Teams along with three players who were also received All-State honors for their efforts on the soccer pitch this season.

Two local coaches were also honored. The Region 7 Coach of the Year is Emily Ramon of Asheboro High School and in Region 8, the Coach of the Year is Eddie Tuck of Providence Grove.

Randolph County 5, Hamlet 1

Braxton Walker drove in 1 run on 3 hits while Drew Harmon had 1 hit with 2 rbi to lead the offense. Jake Riddle (rbi, 2 runs), Caleb Stickle, Clay Hill (run), Peyton Patterson (run) and Caden Lasley also had one hit each.

Drake Purvis got the complete game win with 1 (earned) run on 5 hits and 1 walk with 9 strikeouts.

High Point 15, Liberty 0

Post 81 couldn't solve High Point's Tony Lopez who hit 1 batter and walked five. Isaac Yates coaxed base-on-balls both times at the plate.

Among Post 87's hits, Jake Little went 2-for-2 with a double and 2 runs scored. Gage Griffiths had 1 hit, an rbi and 1 run scored and Ethan Willard walked and scored a run.


June 2, 2024 – Sunday Results

Mocksville-Davie 6, Randolph County 2

Post 45 scored two runs in the first but were unable to add to that total.

Braxton Walker had 1 hit and drove in both runs. Caden Lasley, Caleb Dunn and Peyton Patterson also had hits.

Connor Adams pitched 5.2 innings and took the loss giving up 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks with 6 strikeouts. Drew Harmon finished the game allowing 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 2 batters.


June 1, 2024 – Saturday Results

BASEBALL – 1A CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (Game 2 at Holly Springs)

#2 Uwharrie Charter 6, #3 Northside 1 (UCA wins series 2-0)

Northside scored in the bottom of the first inning but 4 runs by the Eagles in the third along with 2 more in the fifth led to a two-game sweep for Uwharrie Charter Academy and the program's third baseball championship.

Trey Kennedy led a string of eight UCA batters with 1 hit each with a home run, 3 rbi and 2 runs scored. Troy Carver, Walker Wilkins (2 runs), Caleb Stickle (double, rbi, run), Carter Brown (run), Grat Dalton (rbi), Landon Zephir and Alex Carver (triple) also had hits.

Brett Smith was the winning pitcher giving up 1 (earned) run on 4 hits with 3 strikeouts in seven innings.

Jake Hunter, who struck out 11 as the winning pitcher in Game 1, was named Tournament MVP.

SOFTBALL – 2A CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (Game 2 at UNC-Greensboro)

#4 Southwestern Randolph 3, #3 Midway 2 (SWR wins series 2-0)

Southwestern Randolph won the 2A Softball Championship with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Sara-Kate Marion – pinch running for Hayleigh Thompson – scored on a base hit by Kami Dunn. Marion tied the game just as the throw arrived from left field and the ball bounced away from the catcher allowing Madelyn Smith to score the game-ending run.

Smith had 2 hits in the game with single hits by Dunn (rbi), Alyssa Harris (double), Macie Crutchfield, Maddie Strider, Micah Wilson and Thompson. Courtesy runner Ryleigh Hineline scored the first Cougar run in the fourth inning running for Crutchfield.

As she did in Game 1, Macie Crutchfield got the win and was named Tournament MVP. In 12 innings pitched, Crutchfield totaled 2 (earned) runs on 7 hits, 3 walks and 2 hit batters with 19 strikeouts. At the plate she was 4-for-7 with 2 runs batted in.

The championship is Southwestern Randolph's fifth title overall with two 2A Championships and three 3A Championships.

Liberty 13, Moore County 3

Post 81 scored in 5 of the 6 innings played to slowly build their lead.

Grant Underwood has 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice for Liberty. Andrew Thomas had 2 hits with a double and scored 3 runs. Jayten Beasley had 2 hits with a double and 2 rbi. Jacob Flinchum had 1 hit and scored 3 runs.

Beasley pitched the complete game win giving up 3 runs on 7 hits with 6 strikeouts.


June 1, 2024 – MID-PIEDMONT ALL-CONFERENCE

The Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference has announced All-Conference honors for the spring sports season along with Athlete of the Year awards.

Co-Female Athlete of the Year are Avery Ray of Oak Grove and Sion Murrain of Asheboro. Murrain had outstanding seasons for Asheboro in volleyball and basketball and a part of the Blue Comets 4 x 100 all-conference relay team.

Male Athlete of the Year for the MPC is Connor Creech of Oak Grove.

Other Blue Comets singled out in spring sports are Jalaya Showers (Track - Sprint Events MVP), Lance Eerhart (Track – Field Events MVP) and Connor Adams (Baseball – Pitcher of the Year).

Emily Ramon was named Coach of the Year in Women's Soccer.
