BASEBALL – 1A CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (Game 1 at Holly Springs)

#2 Uwharrie Charter 2, #3 Northside 1  (8 innings)

Northside took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning but couldn't finish off Uwharrie Charter in regulation as the Eagles tied the game in the seventh and won it in the eighth innning.

Carter Brown went 3-for-4 with an rbi and a run scored to lead the offense. Walker Wilkins, Caleb Stickle, Grat Dalton and Landon Zephir had one hit each. Zephir drove in Brown in the sixth and Brown drove in Troy Carver with the game-winner.

Jake Hunter pitched all eight innings for the win giving up 1 (earned) run on 5 hits and 2 walks with 11 strikeouts.

SOFTBALL – 2A CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES (Game 1 at UNC-Greensboro)

#4 Southwestern Randolph 13, #3 Midway 0

Macie Crutchfield gave up a bunt single in the sixth inning and a walk in the seventh while striking out 9 batters in the five-inning win.

Four Cougars had three hits each led by Maddie Strider who had two doubles, scored twice and drove in five runs. Alyssa Harris (2 doubles, rbi, 3 runs), Kami Dunn (rbi, 3 runs) and Crutchfield (2 rbi, 2 runs) also had three hits each.

Madelyn Smith had two hits including a 2-rbi double. Micah Wilson, Hayleigh Thompson (rbi, run) and Lileigh Payne (run) had one hit each. Nauttica Parrish scored a run.

May 31, 2024 – COLLEGE SIGNINGS

Trinity High School held commitment ceremonies recently for three student athletes.

Kacey Blakeney signed to continue his football and academic career at Averett University in Danville, VA. Blakeney also played basketball for the Bulldogs and on the gridiron, the two-way player averaged over 5 tackles a game his senior season with 3 interceptions.

The Averett Cougars are members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Rilan White signed as a cheerleader with UNC-Charlotte. Trinity High School's Female Athlete of the Year, White was a member of the tennis and soccer teams as well as an All-Conference golfer.

UNC-Charlotte is a member of the American Athletic Conference.

Dominic Payne committed to Longwood University for basketball after a four-sport career at Trinity. Along with being named Player of the Year in basketball in the Piedmont Athletic Conference twice, Payne was selected All-Conference a total of 11 times and was a regional qualifier in tennis.

The Longwood Lancers in Farmville, VA are members of the Big South Conference.

Post 45 tied the game 2-2 in the seventh inning but Chatham scored on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning for the win.

Drew Harmon had 2 hits with single hits by Caden Lasley, Braxton Walker and Tate Andrews.

Austin Lemons worked six innings for no decision with Samuel Asbill taking the loss giving up 1 run on 1 hit.

Liberty 5, Hope Mills 0

Andrew Thomas had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs on offense with two putouts and six assists at shortstop for Liberty.

Jackson Berger earned his second win of the season scattering 5 hits across six innings with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Chance Holdaway faced 3 batters in the seventh.


May 29, 2024 – Wednesday Results

LEGION BASEBALL

Rowan County 1, Randolph County 0

One run in the fourth inning was enough for Rowan County to pick up the non-league win.

Post 45 got hits from Jake Riddle, Clay Hill, Tate Andrews and Caleb Dunn. Parker Kines worked sic innings and took the loss allowing 1 run on 7 hits. Samuel Asbill gave up 1 hit in the seventh inning.

Liberty 13, Hope Mills 3

Liberty took advantage of a shaky start by Hope Mills in their season opener to build a 7-run lead in the top of the first and never looked back.

Post 81 had 11 hits, led by two each from Jayten Beasley, Noah Lester and Logan Fox. Bauer Bowlings had a solo home run and Cade McCallum a bases-clearing double to drive in 3 runs.

Brody Engle gave up 3 (earned) runs on 5 hits and 1 walk with 7 strikeouts in four innings of work. Noah Lester pitched the fifth inning allowing 1 hit and 1 walk.


May 28, 2024 – Tuesday Results

WOMEN'S SOCCER - 2A REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

#1 Pine Lake Prep 3, #6 Wheatmore 2

Ellie Garrison scored both Warrior goals with Natalie Bowman providing 1 assist. Lucy Lockwood had 12 saves.

Garrison finished her high school career with 305 career goals, 79 goals ahead of the next best total (226).

May 28, 2024 – COLLEGE SIGNINGS

Trinity High School held signing days last week for three student athletes.

Natalie Franko committed to Davidson-Davie Community College to continue her volleyball and academic career.

The DDCC Storm is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Brayden Hall and Spencer May signed with UNC Pembroke for wrestling and to continue their education. Both were members of this year's 2A Dual Team Championship team with May a four-time qualifier to the state individual championship tournament and Hall a three-year qualifier.

UNC Pembroke is a member of Conference Carolinas.

Liberty built a 5-0 lead which was just enough to survive Post 8's four-run rally in the seventh inning.

Post 81 got 2 hits each from Andrew Thomas and Noah Lester with Thomas scoring twice while Lester drove in two runs and scored another. Logan Fox, Austin Smith, Shane Immel and Chance Holdaway had 1 hit each.

Cade McCallum pitched 5.2 shutout innings and got the win with 4 hits, 4 walks and 7 strikeouts. Bauer Bowling worked the final 1.1 inning.


May 27, 2024 – STATE CHAMPIONSHIP SCHEDULES

The 2A and 4A Softball Championships will be held at UNC-Greensboro's softball stadium.

Southwestern Randolph will play Midway High School for the 2A title in a best-of-three series with Game 1 on Friday, May 31, Game 2 on Saturday, June 1 and Game 3 (if necessary) also on June 1.

2A Game 1: Friday at 7:30pm.

2A Game 2: Saturday at 2:00pm.
2A Game 3 (if necessary): Saturday at 8:00pm OR 5:00pm if the 4A Championship ends in 2 games.

Admission is $8 for Game 1 and $12 for Saturday admission (games 2 and 3).

#2 Uwharrie Charter 12, #1 Mount Airy 0

Uwharrie Charter Academy will have a chance to defend their 2023 Baseball Championship next week after a 12-0 win at Mount Airy High School in the West Region title game.

Logun Wilkins threw 70 pitches in the complete game win giving up 5 hits with 4 strikeouts.

UCA built a 3-run lead in the fifth inning and followed that with a nine-run seventh for the final margin.

Caleb Stickle had 3 hits with 2 doubles, drove in 4 runs and scored twice to lead the offense. There were two hits for Troy Carver (double) and Jake Hunter (rbi, run). Single hits by Walker Wilkins (2 runs) and Carter Brown (double, 3 runs).

The Eagles (26-6) will play Northside-Pinetown (22-6) in a best-of-three series Friday and Saturday, May 31 – June 1. Location and times are expected to be announced early in the week.

Chatham County scored two runs in the top of the first and led throughout adding two more in the seventh inning.

Randolph County had five singles from Jake Riddle, Clay Hill and Drew Harmon. Peyton Patterson had a hit and scored on a single by Gavin Allen.

Drake Purvis started and took the loss with Connor Adams, Parker Kines and Harmon also spending time on the mound.


May 24, 2024 – Friday Results

SOFTBALL – REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (Game 3)

#4 SW Randolph 2, #2 North Stanly 0

Southwestern Randolph won the decisive third game 2-0 to take the 2A West Region Softball Championship two games to one over North Stanly.

Lileigh Payne singled with two outs in the third inning, stole second and scored on an error for a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars went ahead 2-0 when Madelyn Smith singled to lead off the sixth inning, stole second and scored on a hit by Alyssa Harris.

Macie Crutchfield got the win giving up 5 hits with 2 hit batters and 5 strikeouts.

Southwestern Randolph (21-7) will play Midway High School (21-3) for the 2A State Championship in a three game series Friday and Saturday, May 31 – June 1 with the location and times to be determined.

Randolph County 8, Mocksville-Davie 6

Post 45 used a six-run fifth inning to go from down 3 runs to up 3 and held on to win the season opener in Mocksville. Austin Lemons, Braxton Walker and Samuel Asbill each spent time on the mound with Walker getting the win and Asbill earning a save.

Drew Harmon had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs to lead Randolph County's 6-hit attack. Also in the hit column were Clay Hill (rbi), Tate Andrews (rbi), Peyton Patterson (run) and Lucas Connor (run).

Hamlet 7, Liberty 4

Post 81 jumped in front 3-0 in the first inning but Hamlet responded with five runs in the second inning to grab the lead and held on for the road win.

Austin Smith had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs for Liberty. There were single hits from Noah Lester (double, run), Ethan Lester (rbi, run), Shane Immel, Bryson Marley and Cade McCallum.

Chance Holdaway took the loss with Carson Williams, Smith and McCallum also seeing action on the mound.


May 23, 2024 – Thursday Results

BASEBALL – REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (Game 2)

#1 Mount Airy 1, #2 Uwharrie Charter 0 (Series tied 1-1)

A one-out walk in the first inning followed by a two-out rbi triple by Landon Cox held up for Mount Airy and the Granite Bears forced a deciding third game in the West Region Championship Series against Uwharrie Charter Academy.

Brett Smith took the loss allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits and 4 walks with 3 strikeouts.

Kam Hawks got the shutout win giving up 2 hits, 3 walks and a hit batter with 12 strikeouts.

Caleb Stickle and Carter Brown had singles for the Eagles.

Game Three will be at Mount Airy High School. The game is scheduled for Saturday night but the weather may necessitate a change.

WHS: Two goals and one assist each by Natalie Bowman and Ellie Garrison. Lucy Lockwood had 7 saves in her 27th career shutout.

The Warriors will play for a third straight West Region championship next week.

Tannerr Marsh (AHS '23) has been named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team.

Marsh has started every game at shortstop for the Liberty Flames with a .914 fielding percentage. He has a .273 batting average and a .424 slugging percentage with 16 doubles, a triple and 4 home runs.

May 23, 2024 – COLLEGE SIGNINGS

Trinity senior Gavin Hardister recently signed to wrestle for Iowa Western in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Hardister helped lead the Bulldogs to a 2A Dual State Championship with a perfect 38-0 season and the Individual State Championship in the 215 weight class.

The Iowa Western Reivers compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Logann Beaver from Eastern Randolph has signed with Davidson-Davie Community College to continue her academic and volleyball careers.

An All-Conference selection in multiple sports in high school, Beaver will join the DDCC Storm in the NJCAA.

Madelyn Smith had 4 hits and drove in both runs for Southwestern Randolph. Hayleigh Thompson reached on a single in the third and scored on Smith's first hit to put the Cougars up 1-0. Her last hit was an rbi triple in the bottom of the thirteenth which followed a leadoff walk by Lileigh Payne who scored the game-ending run. Alyssa Harris and Maddie Strider also had hits.

Macie Crutchfield earned the complete game win. Crutchfield gave up 1 (earned) run on 9 hits, 3 walks and 1 hit batter with 11 strikeouts in 13 innings.

The Regional Championship Series is tied 1 game each with the deciding Game 3 scheduled for 6:00 Friday evening at North Stanly High School. Tickets are only available on-line through   gofan.com.

Post 81 (3-1) scored three runs in each of the first two innings to establish a 6-0 lead and held on for the non-division win.

Liberty's Bauer Bowlings hit a solo home runs while Andrew Thomas (triple, 2 rbi, run) and Logan Fox (double, triple, rbi, run) had 2 hits each. Jayten Beasley, Noah Lester, Chance Holdaway and Austin Smith (double) all had 1 hit and scored 1 run. Shane Immel had a hit with an rbi.

Five pitchers saw action with Beasley getting the win giving up 3 runs (2 er) on 5 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work.


May 22, 2024 – COLLEGE SIGNING

Eastern Randolph's Samuel Asbill has committed to Guilford Technical Community College to continue his academic and baseball career.

The .389 career hitter will join the GTCC Titans in NJCAA Region 10.


May 22, 2024 – ALUMNI HONORS

Trevor Marsh (AHS '19) was one of five UNC-Wilmington Seahawks named to the Coastal Athletic Association baseball All-Conference First Team.

Marsh led UNC-W with a .357 batting average this season with career-best numbers in slugging percentage (.602) and home runs (14). This is the seniors second straight year on the All-Conference team.

Alex Coleman (SWR '21) has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region Team for a second straight season.

Uwharrie Charter scored 3 runs in the second inning and another in the third and held off Mount Airy to win game 1 in the 1A West Region Championship Series. Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday at UCA.

Jake Hunter got the complete game shut-out win giving up 6 hits and 1 walk with 7 strikeouts.

Walker Wilkins (double, 2 rbi) and Trey Kennedy (run) had 2 hits each for the Eagles. Carter Brown, Landon Zephir (rbi, run) and Jose Ramirez (run) had one hit each.

Brison George had three of the Granite Bear's hits including a double but took the loss as starting pitcher.

North Stanly scored an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win game 1 in the best-of-three West Region Championship Series. Game two will be Wednesday night at 6:00 at Southwestern Randolph.

Macie Crutchfield took the loss giving up 1 (unearned) run on 1 hit and 1 walk with 12 strikeouts.

Sophia Crist got the shut-out win with 5 hits, 1 hit batter and 15 strikeouts. Crist reached on an error in the eighth inning and scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

Micah Wilson had 2 hits for the Cougars. Single hits by Crutchfield, Kami Dunn and Maddie Strider.

May 21, 2024 – RANDLEMAN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Randleman High School has introduced Scott Tyson as the new women's basketball coach.

Tyson is a graduate of UNC-Pembroke where he played football for the Braves and has served as an assistant basketball coach at Wheatmore, Piedmont Classical and Southern Guilford. Tyson served as head women's coach for the Storm during the 2022-2023 season.

Athletic Director Jake Smith said “the tradition of Tigers athletics is what attracted [Tyson] to Randleman” and that Tyson “wants to continue what has been successful with the lady Tigers.”

WHS: Ellie Garrison scored 2 goals and Bri Hill added another as Wheatmore managed to get past Wilkes Central for the third straight year. Natalie Bowman and Garrison recorded an assist each.

Lucy Lockwood had 4 saves and set a new Warriors record with her 26th career shutout.

Liberty scored in all 5 innings and improved to 2-1 on the season with a win in their home opener.

Jackson Berger got the win giving up 1 (earned) run on 1 hit and 3 walks while striking out 4 batters.

Ten Post 81 batters produced 11 hits. Ethan Frye led with 2 hits, 3 rbi and 2 runs scored. Bauer Bowlings also scored twice with a hit and a walk. Jayten Beasley, Logan Fox and Ethan Lester each hit doubles and drove in one run.


May 20, 2024 - SOUTHWESTERN RANDOLPH BASEBALL

Southwestern Randolph High School has announced that Ed Lagrama, interim coach during the final weeks of the baseball season, has been named head coach of the Cougars varsity baseball program. He had been the head coach of junior varsity baseball.

Lagrama has assisted in several sports and served a stint as head coach of Cougars softball receiving Coach of the Year honors in the Mid-Piedmont Conference following the 2018 softball season.

#2 Uwharrie Charter 4, #3 Christ the King 3 (8 innings)

Uwharrie Charter tied the game 3-3 with a run in the seventh but needed an extra inning to extend their winning streak to 18 games.

Jose Ramirez went 3-for-3 at the plate including the game-winning double which drove in Grat Dalton in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ramirez totaled 2 rbi and scored a run in the game.

Dalton had 2 hits including a double and an rbi. Carter Brown and Troy Carver both hit doubles.

Mollie Bulla suffered her first loss of the season giving up 4 runs on 3 hits – two of them were home runs – with 8 walks and 10 strikeouts.

The Cougar's only hit and only base runner came when Madelyn Smith tripled past a diving left fielder to lead off the top of the seventh inning. Macie Crutchfield earned the shutout win giving up 2 hits with 4 walks and 2 hit batters. Crutchfield struck out 11 as the Cougar defense stranded all 8 West Wilkes runners on the base paths.

The season opener between two teams restarting their baseball programs was one-sided with Post 81 - which missed the 2023 season winning in five innings over Wilkesboro Post 31 which had not fielded a senior team for more than a decade.

Liberty scored in each inning capped by six runs in the top of the fifth for the 10 run advantage. Jacob Flinchum produced a 2-rbi single in the third inning, Bauer Bowlings an rbi double in the fourth and Carson Williams cleared the bases with a 3-rbi hit in the sixth inning to lead 7 players with hits.

Starter Chance Holdaway pitched two innings giving up 2 earned runs on 1 hit and 2 walks with 4 strikouts. Brody Engle followed and got the win with 1 hit, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts in two innings of work. Cade McCallum struck out the 3 batters he faced in the fifth.

Jaira Arellano started the scoring with a spectacular pass from Bridgett Diaz Lopez to Josellin Carbajal in the center who played it across to Arellano for the goal. Penny Smith scored goals 2 and 3 and Arellano scored the final goal to solidify the win.

Josellin Carbajal, Abby Becker, and Chloe Chanmaly each had an assist for Asheboro.

North Davidson used a six-run fifth inning to surge ahead 6-0 and hold on for the win. There were home runs by Abby Brown and Eleanor Potter while winning pitcher Kayla Milam went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and 2 rbi.

Mary Peyton Hodge threw 4.2 innings and took the loss before giving way to Isabelle Lawrence.

Lawrence and Carly White (2 doubles, run) had 2 hits each.

SWR: Macie Crutchfield allowed 4 baserunners in the win with 3 hits and one reaching on an error. She struck out 12 batters.

At the plate Crutchfield had 2 hits with an rbi. There were single hits by Madelyn Smith (run), Kami Dunn (run), Alyssa Harris (double, run), Lileigh Payne (run), Hayleigh Thompson (double, rbi) and Micah Wilson.

UCA: Kenzie Hill had 2 hits and Mollie Bulla hit a home run (her 5th). Bulla gave up 8 hits in the loss and struck out 8 batters.

May 2, 2024 – ALUMNI HONORS

Kynley Brewer (UCA '23) has been named to the Conference Carolinas Softball All-Conference 2nd Team. The UNC-Pembroke outfielder started every game and hit .321 her freshman year with 11 doubles.

May 1, 2024 – ALUMNI HONORS

The 2024 USA South Conference softball awards include Rookie of the Year Ky Perdue (SWR '23). The Pfeiffer University shortstop is hitting .359 with a .956 fielding percentage. Perdue was also named 2nd Team All-Conference.

Kelsey Craven (ER '20) of the Greensboro Pride was also named 2nd Team All-Conference. In addition to her excellent defensive work (.974 fielding), Craven is batting .322 with 2 home runs in her senior season.
